Lesser known backyard creatures:

This tiny 3.5 mm fly is a Swing fly (Diptera; Sepsidae; Nemopoda nitidula; Schwingfliege). I like it a lot because (the males at least) are actually winking with one wing at a time! They run around on top of plant litter, wink for partners and the females lay their eggs.

At the abdominal constriction you see a white, parasitic mite. This is a reminder of the fact that for almost every animal species you can expect one or more specific parasites to be associated with and some nonspecific ones too.

ID: the family can be recognized by the winking behaviour, the spherical head, the abdominal double constriction. But there are many genera and species in the family, so further ID is tricky (in my region the most frequently encountered species would be Sepsis cynipsea.) I used www.diptera.info and the book of J.&H. Haupt, 1998. Fliegen und Mücken. Narturbuch , Augsburg

Technique: Macro lens, macro twin flash, monopod, RAW, 400 ISO, 1/125sec f/20. Postprocessing in PS: remove grain, smudges, sharpen, crop, resize.. Enjoy!

Hi Dietrich.
So interesting fly and excellent close-up picture. I like composition and framing o the image, impressive combination of sharp leaf with fly and blurred BG. Well done and TFS.
Alexei.

Hi Dietrich,
This is very well done when you consider the swing flies 3.5mm size, even with your crop..Excellent detail, color, DOF, and use of flash to illuminate. It's well composed, and I like the POV as well.
And thanx for pointing out that parasitic mite..a testament to the detail here :)
Howard

Lieber Dietrich,
hervorragend komponierte Nahaufnahme, mit einer Präzision, die angesichts der außerordentlichen Vergrößerung dieser winzigen Fliege wirklich beeindruckt.
Mit Dank und herzlichen Grüßen,
Peter
