One of the many FERNS of New Zealand

One of the things I like about New Zealand is its lush greenery and the many native bush and forests that can often be seen throughout the country.

I love walking in the bush and looking at the ferns in their many different stages of growth. I can find so much beauty even in the ferns as they start to die off.

Ferns are ancient. They have neither flowers nor seeds. Their beauty comes from form and not colour. We know that ferns bear spores on the backs of their leaves; but originally it was a long time before this was realised.

Spores are produced on all leaves or only some. They are tiny and dust-like; the number of spores from one frond amounting to millions. The air where ferns grow is full of spores that are capable of surviving for very long periods before germinating. The dark brown and sometimes red, spore-bearing fronds of many ferns create an interesting contrast with the other green leaves.

Ferns are typically found in moist forested areas although some hardy species can be found in coastal, urban, and even in desert locations. They vary in form and size. Some aquatic ferns have fronds less then 25 mm, where as tree ferns can grow to 10 meters in height, with fronds as long as 3 meters. With many smaller plants the stem is underground, and the fronds being the only visible parts.

New Zealand has around 164 different fern species many of which are widespread.

I like the texture and graphic aspect of the image that you present us.
It can be well appreciated the form and progression of every single leaf, like a pattern.

Hi Janice

Still at it, shooting away at your favourite subject "ferNZ", and as usual you have the perfect feel and well developed touch to get the best out of your subject. This fern is just beautifully captured and presented.

The mosaic of tiny leaves is stunning and very pleasing on the eye and the specific POF created some very interesting angles and lines. Lovely colours and splendid details make this a pleasure to take a look at.

Lovely patterns in this one of the ... ferns,well composed picture,on my walk in the forest today I saw only the remainings of summer,brown,wet and flattened ferns,anyway not so long to go before the start to relive again here,thanks

This is a beautifully composed pattern of fern fronds with fine sharpness, colours and lighting.
Ferns are great but it's a pity that nearly all are inedible!

Note:
Through your photography I have come to appreciated the many links between New Zealand and the Pacific Northwest of the USA.

Ferns are one of the most common flora found in the temperate rain forests of the Pacific Northwest. They are everywhere. Being so common you'd thing I'd have better photographs to show of them, but I don't. Sometimes it is easy to miss the forest for the trees. I will have to photograph some Oregon ferns just for you. But until then the only ones I've got are ancillary to other photographs:

I expect your ferns in NZ are similar to those in Australia if not the same. I was most impressed by the enormous size of them in Australia. This is a beautiful close-up showing the details of the leaves. Well composed too.

Hi Janice. Good to see a close up of NZ ferns. When a tramper at NPBHS in Taranaki, we spent days pushing through ferns on Mt Egmont. Now not seeing these so often it indicates what a special and pleasant soft plant they can be. Good clarity and most interesting notes. TFS. Murray.

I simply love patterns. This particular image reminds me so much of my home in Mendocino on the Northern Coast of California..If you have heard of it, then perhaps you know..but if not I suggest you look it up...it is a garden of eden discovered by many...

wonderful work with patterns gets a A plus from me....very nice image and so well composed..You really put your heart into your posts!
