[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This one and my next two posts will be on different aspects of a Mediterranean bivalve I adore, Rudicardium tuberculatum, the "Rough Cockle". These fairly large (for the Mediterranean/Aegean seas, that is) and variously colored bivalves usually inhabit sandy infralittoral zones at a depth of 8-15 meters or more, burrowing into the sandy substratum and filtering the seawater with two (incurrent and excurrent) siphons modified from their mantles. Here, I wanted to show both insides and outsides of the shells of these molluscs, each approximately 5-6 cms across. Insides are allways dull-white and smooth, outsides greatly varying from pure white to almost brownish-black and in between varying degrees of reddish-brown to blackish bands of colored segments between whitish ones and strongly ribbed. In life, the two valves are connected near the umbos with a tough but flexible keratinous ligament, a double tooth mechanism (a hinge) providing a positive closure of the shells, these details will be visible in the following posts.
The two specimens shown here were collected while snorkelling from a depth of nearly eight meters offshore to Azmak Beach, Ovacik - Çeşme/Izmir. The macrophoto was taken under available daylight, open-shade conditions, with the help of a curved white cardboard reflector to provide some passive fill-in light, as usual over a dark BG.

Bu ve sonraki iki yüklemem çok sevdiğim bir Akdeniz midyesi olan Rudicardium tuberculatum'un farklı görünümleri hakkında olacak. Akdeniz ve Ege Denizi için irice sayılabilecek ve farklı renklenmelerde olabilen bu midyeler infralittoral zonun 8-15 m, hatta daha derinlerindeki kumluk zeminlerde kuma gömülü olarak yaşarlar ve mantolarının değişimiyle oluşmuş "getiren ve götüren" özellikli iki sifon aracılığıyla suyu filtre ederek beslenirler. Burada bu yumuşakçaların 5-6 cm kadar olan iki tanesinin kavkılarını, içleri ve dışları görülecek şekilde sergilemek istedim. İç kısımlar daima mat-beyaz ve düz yapıda olurken dış taraflar belirgin tırtıklı bir yapıya sahiptir ve saf beyazdan neredeyse tamamı kahverengimsi siyaha kadar değişen renklenmeler ve beyaz sahalar arasında kalan farklı koyuluk ve yoğunluklarda kırmızımsı kahverengiden siyahımsıya kadar değişebilen bantlanmalar içerirler. Canlı bireyde iki kavkı umbo yöreleri yakınlarında sağlam ama esnek keratinsi bir ligamentle birbirine bağlanmış ve çift dişli bir mekanizma ya da menteşe de kavkıların güçlü bir şekilde kapanmasını olası kılmıştır. Bu detaylar sonraki iki yüklememde daha iyi görülecektir.
Burada görülen iki örnek Ovacık/Çeşme'de, Azmak Plajı açıklarında yaklaşık sekiz metre derinlikteki kumluk zeminden dalarak çıkartılmışlardır. Makro çekimleri açık gölge şartlarında, doğal gün ışığı altında, eğimli beyaz kartondan bir pasif yansıtıcının da yardımıyla yine koyu zemin üzerinde gerçekleştirildi.

Gracias por comentar mi foto del caracol, tal como bien me corrige se trata de un molusco y no un crustáceo, ya veo que entiendes mucho más que yo de este tema. He visitado toda tu galería y es muy interesante y bien elaborada cada foto igualmente esta que nos presentas hoy.

Referente a mi foto, es posible que como consecuencia de que no se el idioma ingles y utilizo un traductor, no me haya expresado bien. Me refería a que el hombre, el ser humano, ha aprendido y ha utilizado muchas cosas de la naturaleza. La espiral que forma la "casa" del caracol es un ejemplo de ello, la espiral de los relojes convencionales y otras utilidades posiblemente hayan sido copiadas de este molusco. No se explicarme de otra manera. En mi país (Catalunya) a un tornillo de rosca sin fin
le llamamos un "cargol" (caracol)
