This is a male Common Spreadwing (Lestes sponsa). Spreadwings are also known as Emerald Damselflies but unlike other damselflies they rest with their wings spread out. There 80 known species of Lestes spread around the world.

This is common and widespread in most of Europe wherever there is standing water with plenty of standing vegetation. Common Spreadwings are most numerous at shallow ponds.

Males can be told from females by the patches of pale blue powdery scales, or pruinescence on the thorax and abdominal tip.

I have yet to take a good shot of this species, as they either settle where the vegetation is dense or they settle on the wrong side of a stem.
To get this shot, I waded with my sandals in the shallow water of a reedy pond a couple of km from where we live. I am not totally satisfied with the POV and sharpness, but I thought this was worth posting.

The image was taken at a distance of 1.8 meters with the camera hand-held. After cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan

You're to hard on yourself, this is a great shot. And I think the sharpness is surprisingly good considering your using a 1.4X as well.
Well composed diagonal shot. It looks fine to me.

Solen skiner idag.

Hello Ivan,

What a sharp and detail capture of this damsel. Excellent clarity and vividness exposed and I like those bug eyes. If this is as small as our species here, than it is a mighty task to get this good looking damsel.

Well done.

Please allow me to add to my personal theme and favorite.

Hi Ivan
great details and a very good ligth...
nice colors and POV, showing the fine details of the wings and body..
well done.
PS: it looks a bit oversharped, but I think later that is cause of the strong light... :)

Hi Ivan
Quelle finesse dans le corps pour cette belle demoiselle avec ses gros yeux, belles couleurs et excellente netteté
Bravo et au revoir...JP

How sharp is this Ivan. Wonderful. As with Fartash you do ot wander far from the general subjects of this wonderful nature kingdom of ours...I am so glad that there are people such as you who still care truly for the world! Great post Ivan...

Under the circumstances you mention Ivan, this is a perfect capture by all means. Even the body hairs are sharply in focus and the blurriness of those two left wings has no significance at all. Good composition, and TFS.

Waawwwwwwwwwwwwwww. This capture with its splendid details of Common Spreadwing is great friend! You and your photos is perfect in every way Friend. This capture is most beautiful Odonat which I have seen in TN til now. TFS my friend!
