Good image, James. Very educational (for seasoned fellows as you are at least;-)
Image wise and technically spoken I'm quite surprised (once again) aboyt the long shutter speed. However a wide angle provides no camera shake issues, I guess.
Well done. Awesome view...

wow..doesn't get much better than that, does it? What a view. Nice composition with the blue lake in the foreground, Mount Ngauruhoe in the middle where it should be, then the snow capped Ruapehu in the back, all sweeping in from the right. Sharp throughout and well exposed, great shot.

Ha ha! What a great name - Mount DOOM!!
Superb shot of this classic cone volcano!
There is some amazing geography in New Zealand and this is a prime example of it!
It always amazes me how snow can stay frozen on a volcano, one of the (potentially) hottest places on Earh!
Sharp with a huge, giant heap of detail and stunning clarity.
Nice range of colours and good lighting.
You've handled the exposure superbly!
Well done James.

Very interesting note James.
I can see why Peter Jackson chose New Zealand to film The Lord of The Rings. The area is very unique and rugged looking with it's Volcanoes. Well captured with the sun behind you and nice blue sky.

Interesting to study the details of this volcanic landscape, where the lack of vegetation is so visible!
The image has a great feeling of depth, and the lake is the only element reminding of life...
Super definition, attractive colour palette!

As I travel through your portfolio - I am so sorry - we have decided this year - to stop travelling overseas.
The scenery depicted in this image is quite different from the the Hawaian Islands.
The bare slopes tell the story of young volcanoes. Is this area part of the "ring of fire"?
I assume - the lake on the right hand side of the image - is a warm acidic crater lake, which you mention in your very interesting notes.
It is not surprising - seing the devastation left behind - that even today modern people still pray to gods in the volcanoes for protection...
An impressive landscape - impressivly presented.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
