Indian Pigeon

I shot this pigeon this morning in a housing colony in New Delhi. The weather was cloudy with intermittant drizzle. I shot the image in manual mode (hand-held) at ISO 400.
I could not find any specific information on this pigeon on the net. It is a common urban bird in North India and lives comfortably in human settlements.

Here is a note on pigeons in general borrowed from Wikipedia:

Pigeons and doves constitute the family Columbidae within the order Columbiformes, which include some 300 species of near passerine birds. In general parlance the terms "dove" and "pigeon" are used somewhat interchangeably. In ornithological practice, there is a tendency for "dove" to be used for smaller species and "pigeon" for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the term "dove" and "pigeon." This family occurs worldwide, but the greatest variety is in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones. The young doves and pigeons are called "squabs."

Pigeons and doves are stout-bodied birds with short necks and short slender bills with a fleshy cere. The species commonly referred to just as the "pigeon" is the feral Rock Pigeon, common in many cities.

Their usually flimsy nests are made of sticks, and the two white eggs are incubated by both sexes. Doves feed on seeds, fruit and plants. Unlike most other birds (but see flamingo), the doves and pigeons produce "crop milk," which is secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop. Both sexes produce this highly nutritious substance to feed to the young.

Hello Ram,
Nice pose captured very well, I like the pigeon looking back over its' shoulder. We to have these in our cities and any abandoned buildings in the country. They can be a pest as they are quite messy so they are unpopular. But as your capture shows they are very colorful and I think very beautiful. Thanks for sharing this well done image.
Rick

Right...Rick said just what I was thinking..Old Rick is up early this AM...and pretty heads on too.....well add my two cents as well then Ram...nice that somebody notices the lesser of creatures...so many cities, so many pigeons...Who cares? We do!

Welldone my friend.

Merhaba Ram,
Yesterday an Indian squirrel, today an Indian pigeon, I wonder what you will give us tomorrow my friend. But coming back to this pigeon, well your POV is original but the bird somehow noticed you and gave you a beautiful profile with a red-eye! Also plenty of fine detail on the plumage/coloration of the head, neck, wings and tail. The neutral BG concentrates the whole attention on the pigeon, wonderful, no?

Hello Ram,
Fine capture of a Feral Pigeon from an unusual rear POV. The focusing is spot on to give pretty good overall sharpness and the composition superb against a neutral BG.
Attractive shot of a very common bird and thanks for sharing it,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Ram,
This is one of the best shots I've seen of the Feral Pigeon(in the wild Rock Pigeon) common everywhere! I suppose Venice and Trafalgar Square in London are the best places to see them en masse. I love your POV and its pose here and you show the pattern of the plumage and the colours very well. Great focus on the red eye too! Well done!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Ram,

I love the pose with him looking over his shoulder showing off his wonderful feathers. Nice colors - the irridescent green of his neck and the orange eye look lovely. I remember them as being very big pigeons.

Nice image of this Rock Pigeon Ram!
There is some slight blur but it's not a major problem.
Nice colours and good lighting.
Excellent composition and I like the way it is looking over it's shoulder at you :-)
Well done,
Joe

Hi Ram

Unusal POV with good colour and detail. These birds are so unpopular that it takes a posting like this to see that they are actually beautiful. Thanks.

James
