[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Though this image is not totally sharp it is of a species not often posted on TN, so I thought it might be of interest.

Until 20 years ago the Wood White (Leptidea sinapsis) was the only species of its genus in Sweden. However, when the French entomologist, Réal discovered a new separate species this new species (Leptidea reali) was soon discovered in Sweden too.

This is the well-known Wood white, told from Réal’s Wood White by its more rounded hind wings and by the greyish scales on the legs, those of reali being whiter.

The natural size is about the same as that shown on the thumbnail. Strangely enough this up-side down position is typical when feeding and resting. It is feeding here on the flowers of Yellow Lucerne.

Though absent from the very north and south of the country, the Wood White is widespread but sparsely distributed in Swedish forested areas wherever its larval host plant, Lathyrus vernus, the Spring Pea occurs in any quantity. It is widespread but localised in the rest of Europe.

It has two broods, one in May /June and the second in August.

This image of the Wood White was taken at a nature reserve at a distance of about 1.8 meters with the camera hand-held. Though the BG is dark no flash was used.

Hello Ivan,

Thanks for sharing this beauty and I'll place this, if you don't mind in my personal theme.

Superb details on the shot and well perched on the beautiful yellow flower. Both the subjects contrasting very well with the green background. Perfect exposure with excellent depth. Very well done and best regards,
Jusni

Hello Ivan,
a very nice close view of sinapis and the flower. In particular, I like the 'structures' on the small compound eye.
Colour nuances of the wings are well reproduced.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan, interesting butterfly with splendid details and good sharpness, great contrast against blurry BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Ivan,

The white butterfly and yellow flower are beautiful against the dard background.
The colors are wonderful - as are the shades of white. Good details and a lovely composition.

Jane

Bonjour Ivan
Très belle macro, belles couleurs et netteté, très beau sujet bien composé.
Amicalement Robi

hello Ivan

for me the sharpness of your image is excellent
and if at the end of the wings of the butterfly is less sharp,
it shows us that the subject is a little bit on movement and i liked,
excellent luminosity on the on the foreground of the image
and a shadowed background it puts very well in evidence
de subject and tge flower, i love your POV and vertical framing, TFS

Hello Ivan
Magnificent capture with splendid details on the butterfly and very good framing, bg and composition. I captured last summer a couple of this species. They were rather funny for they always flew together and landed in the same pose, one in front of the other. I will post that shot soon though it is not as good as yours, for it was against the sun.
Thank you very much for the marvellous picture and the excellent information.
My best regards
Maite

Hello Ivan,

Hi Ivan

It's always a pleasure to learn something new about nature and to see some rare species being posted. For this i thank you for posting this shot!
The result i would say is actually good. Perhaps it looses a bit of sharpness towards the tips of the wings, but this is less important when dealing with such a species :)
Other than that, i really like the strong contrast between the subject and the BG as well as the superbly controlled exposure here.
Nice work!

Bravo and TFS

I think I've only seen one of these once and it was a much scraggier specimen than this!
Incredible detail in the wing and good sharpness.
Very well composed and your POV is perfect.
Nice lighting though maybe a bit UE.
Excellent BG that is nicely blurred but the DOF is slightly too shallow.
Well done Ivan,
Joe

Ciao Ivan,
amo molto questa fragile farfalla, che incontro anche in Sicilia.
Ha un volo basso e lento, ma non si posa quasi mai sui fiori.
Per questo è molto difficile fotografarla.
Complimenti dunque per questo ottimo scatto.
Ciao,
Marcello

the dark bg that brings out both the butterfly and flower brilliantly!
excellent clarity, good colour and details in the shot

Hola Sr. Ivan.
Agrdable foto, acompañada de una nota muy educativa. Fantasticos colores y en mi opinion es bastante nitida. El fondo difuso le da un valor agregado a su fino trabajo.

Hi Iva, it's a clear presentation of this butterfly, not perfectly sharp, but you show it well, especially hanging down off the yellow plant.
Well done
