Chaffinch ( Fringilla coelebs ) One of the commonest and most widespread birds in Britain, favouring a wide variety of habitats including gardens, parks and woodland. In winter numbers are boosted by the influx of north european birds. Song comprises a descending trill with a characteristic final flurish. Feeds mainly on Insects during the summer months but seeds in the winter where they often gather in large flocks

Well well,
What a superb in flight capture, good clarity on body with a good stretched pose of the neck.
Top marks Mr Glen Snr.

Hi Nicholas!

For a first attempt, you did very well! Your Chaffinch is really beautiful. The exposure settings (really 1/2000?) exolain the sharpness and richness of details although the bird is moving. Maybe that the impression of moving would be accentuated with a more detailed background.

Kind regards

great capture, TFS Ori

Hi Nicholas

great shot for your first attempt, its nice to see a small bird in flight i have tried these shots myself with not much luck, so difficult as they are so quick and you managed to get a perfectly timed sharp shot. well done

Hello Nick,
congratulations for this splendid inflight shot,
great focus and lovely colours with a wonderfull background

Hi Nick,

How did you manage this? This is amazing. There things fly so quickly that it's near impossible to catch them in flight without specialist equipment. I'm sure you get this published.

Hi Nicholas, great inflight work.
Looks like the F/5 worked very well for you here.
Excellent POV, color, exposure, BG, inflight pose and sharp details..
Hard to give you any advice..I don't have a clue from your note what techinique you used to get this one :)

Hello Nick
I have been thinking about these shots as you have...and you now have the 180mm fast lense and the 40d with the 6.5 frames a second....I think you could go down to a couple of stops and still retain a shutter speed high enough (balanced with the iso settings) to get those lovely wings crisp..and as summer comes the sun will obviously play its part!!
Its a Fantastic shot Nick and a very well planned one...11/10!!
Tfs and I look forward to more.

An elegant "flaps down" moment captured nicely Nicholas, a little more centering and this would be perfect. Thanks for sharing this fleeting moment my friend.

Hello Nick,
I can't give you any advice on this superb shot of a landing Chaffinch: the sharpness and lighting are near to perfect and the composition, POV and wing position excellent. All this, coupled with a fine contrasting OOF natural BG make this a first class image.
Thanks for sharing it,

This bird is maybe common but how cute is he!!!

Excellent in-flight shot of this nice bird... The body is perfectly in focus and sharp and the wings just perfectly blurred in order to show the motion... Great bg also enhancing so well the bird and excellent exposition...

You get also a great POV in order to obtain that shot!

Wow Nick, what a great and graceful action shot! Top marks! You had a nice fast shutter speed and I am amazed at the F5 aperture, works well with this lens. Perfect focus and dof, excellent colour, light with good detail and sharpness. Nicely framed and great composition. I would love to see more as I find the inflight shots difficult.

hello Nicholas

superbt inflight shot with the excellent sharpness
of the bird's body & head, and that blur on his wings & tail
that is showing the motion of the image, TFS

A lot of your work brings tears to my eyes - in a good way. This bird is a simple one, but you've turned it into a dazzling creature with your talent. The point of view is perfect, and I feel as if I am flying beside this fellow. The complete composition is beyond excellent - thanks so much for sharing. This deserves high honors, but sadly, I can only give two!

Bravo Nicholas, superb shot, I love the movement of the bird ready to touch down, and the perfect background creamy and smooth as butter. Lucky you with such a first inflight shot!!!! Wow, I'm impressed, I never got close to that result, not a tiny bit. One has to be fast. Great light too! Thank you and I wish you a lot inflight shots to come!

Hello Nick,
Wow, what perfect timing in this splendid in-flight capture of the Chaffinch. Wonderful light and you've caught a very fine profile of the head and a great feeling of motion. Exxellent sharpness too and beautiful colours.
A masterpeice!!
Many thanks, Ulla

What a great in-flight shot. THese are so hard to do. You did a great job.

Hi Nick,
It seems that I missed this little work of art! This is a difficult shot that you achieved like a pro! You had great lightning to use this shutter speed. Details, colors, composition and exposure are superb! This is a winner; some kind of shot that I never was able to do, especially with such a small bird. Congratulations :)!

Hello Nicholas, great shot of a flying bird, very sharp, well composed and perfect technique, a great shot! THanks,

Hi Nick,
I have not been visiting TN quite often as i would like to and after looking at pictures of ppl like you, I feel that i have lot of catching up to do.
This is a super shot and the colors are just excellent. As far my exp goes 180mm sigma is one of the most versatile lens that you can get and once you get used to it, it will give you very good results.

Nice shot! You have captured a beautiful moment. Thanks for sharing.
