LEPIDOPTERA, LYCAENIDAE

Plebeius (Aricia) artaxerxes (Fabricius 1793)

Common English Name: Mountain Argus or Northern Brown Argus

This butterfly is found mostly in the mountains of Europe.
A. artaxerxes is closely related to A. agestis (Brown Argus).
For many years this species was considered to be a subspecies of the Brown Argus and has first been recognized as an independent species the past 20 years.
The 2 species can cross-breed and totally reliable species-characteristics are difficult to define.
The a main difference is the extent of orange on the uppersides. In artaxerxes this is greatly reduced or absent, in agestis it is extensive and usually reaches close to the apex.
It flies June-JulY in Europe in a single brood (A. agestis has two or more broods).

********

Abrazo.

Hi Marcellus

Excellent photograph.

wish mine were like this.

regards Mike.

Hello Marcello,

This is so stunning. Sharp details and blends well with the surrounding. I like the way it perches on that flower and you are giving the subject enough space just in case it feel the needs to fly off.

Well done.

Jusni
