This woodpecker seems to enjoy a tile roof as much as wood! He can be seen flying from rooftop to rooftop nearly every morning.

The northern flicker is a large brown woodpecker. It has a white tail with black bars and a black tip, a light brown to off-white breast with black to brown spots. it has a black "bib" on its upper chest. Males have a black or red "mustache" that runs from its bill down to its cheek.

There are five subspecies of northern flicker: the yellow-shafted flicker, the red-shafted flicker, the gilded flicker, the Guatemalan flicker, and the Cuban flicker and throat color, head color and the presence of a red marking on the neck can vary depending on the subspecies.

The yellow-shafted flicker has a red patch on its neck and yellow feathers on the inside of its wings. The male has a black mustache. Yellow-shafted flickers can be found in the east and the north. The red-shafted flicker has pinkish feathers on the inside of its wings and the male has a red mustache. The red-shafted flicker is common in the west. The gilded flicker can be found in the deserts of southeastern California and southern Arizona. It has yellow wing linings and the males have a red mustache.

The flicker can be found in much of North America from the tree line in Canada and Alaska south to Nicaragua. Flickers in Alaska and Canada are migratory.

The flicker's diet is mostly insects, including ants. They also eat termites, beetles, caterpillars, fruits, and berries. They will sometimes eat seeds and nuts.

The flicker is the only woodpecker in North American that commonly finds food on the ground. It often forages for ants and beetle larvae on the ground. It will sometimes perch on tree limbs to eat berries.

Great composition, POV and BG. It's quite a steep camera angle, which makes it difficult to capture.

Hi Jane

Great POV with gorgeous colours and detail.

The sky is the same colour here today, the daffodils and crocus are out - it is really cold though!

Hi Jane
this is very nice composition
very good colors
well done.

Hello Jane
This is a very impressive picture of the Red Shafted Flicker.
The focus is sharp with fine details as expected from you..
But its the Pov that is totally amazing on this picture...There are three very definite angles..his perch being one..his body being the second...and the third being his head.
It really almost has a 3d look about it.
Top work on the camera and such a fantastic note.
The more I look at the picture the more I am fascinated by the angles!!
Thanks for this one Jane.

Nice job,
I tried to photography this bird when at the house in AZ, not a good sign,
I really like this,
Great image,

The flicker is a very special bird...I have a few images of one species and I have noticed that teh colours on tech Flicker, none other, give off a softness...an unusual softness which looks as though as a mistake but it isn't...happens in ever image I see...great catch Jane!

hello Jane

superbe shot of this northern flicker on the little hillock,
i love the POV from down to up of your image, in French
they say to that POV « en contre-plongé »
if i tranlsate is « againts-diving », i love too that you kept
a good space where the flicker is looking

excellent luminosity of the image, excellent sharpness
and details, and a lovely catch-light at the eye, TFS

Very nice image, looks like he posed just for your shot. I'm a little jealous of your blue sky though, here in Ohio it is usually grey this time of the year and cloudy the rest. TFS

Hello Jane,
Very nice picture, I can't wait to see what you can
do with your new camera.. This portrait is very well
composed.. Well done

Thats a really neat Woodpecker. One I've never seen before. The low POV makes for a neat shadow under his neck. The solid blue sky is a great backdrop for him.

Hi Jane
Très jolie photo de ce bel oiseau, j'aime les belles couleurs et le ciel bleu magnifique dans le background,

Hello Jane,
Wonderful image my friend, we have them in our neck of the woods also. Last year we had one that used to wake us up at 5 AM as he decided to hammer on the light standard in front of the house. I think he was trying to impress the ladies, but I know two humans that were not impressed, lol.

Hi Jane,
Outstanding shot of this Woodpecker with fabulous colours and details on its plumage. The image is tack sharp with perfect lighting and exposure. Against the blue sky as BG it looks majestic and I like its pose and glint on its eye. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hallo Jane
Excellent capture of this amazing bird. Beautiful colours and fine sharp details. It looks as if those dots have been hand painted one by one. I think this bird should actually be called the "Polka-dot bird". Those dots are really amazing and perfectly shaped. I would have liked to see the whole bird, because it is such a beautiful animal. The lovely clear blue sky as background is just tops .Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards

Hello Jane. Nicely closed framing in sharp detail mugshot. Nice perch with the head turning into the frame. Beautiful spotless blue sky as the background. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni
