The Book

Once upon a time, someone wrote the book “The Leaf”. I have never read in that book nor seen it, and I don’t know why I’m fascinated by it. I can’t explain why I’m sure it would be interesting and very important for me and my life to read it. So I started to search for it. I first asked my family and my friends, but they all told me about the same: “Oh, ‘The Leaf’, sure, a great book, but I haven’t got it and don’t know who could help you.” Moreover, all the persons I asked about that book looked at me with a strange smile. You know, the one that means: “I know what you are looking for, I can understand you, but I can’t help you”. The kind of smile and expression on the face of the people who want to show you that they know, that they have already experienced what you are looking for and therefore place themselves above you.

But I didn’t give up and started to visit the libraries. First the ones in my town, then in the neighbourhood and finally with the help of internet. But still without any concrete results. Oh, a lot of librarians told me – again with that strange smile on the face – that they could show me a lot of books about leaves or trees, but added immediately that they supposed I’m not interested in these ones…

One day, I was at an antiques shop held by a very old man with a long, grey beard and round glasses. He smoked his pipe and asked me, before I could talk to him: “So you’re looking for ‘The Leaf’?” Don’t waste your time, you won’t find it here nor anywhere else where one usually gets a book… You certainly know that it’s a particular book!” He said this in an almost gruff tone in total disaccord with his friendly appearance, as if he just didn’t want to tell, and showed me the way to the door. But how could he know what I was looking for? I knew he wouldn’t tell…

I was lost in thought and in order to marshal my ideas decided to go for a walk at my favourite river. It was a bright winter day, quite cold although the sun was shining. While I was thinking at the strange words of the old man, I suddenly saw it! Here it was, lying in front of me, with a wonderfully coloured binding. I sat down and wanted to take it, fascinated and excited by the idea of finally reading what I was expecting since a long time.

But the deception was big. The book was wrapped in many thin layers of ice! I even couldn’t touch it and was afraid to destroy it. I immediately thought at the strange smile of all the people I was talking about it. Was this the reason for it? And I couldn’t wait till the ice would melt! Should I never be able to read it? I looked at it for a long time, absorbed in thought, and all of a sudden I saw an elegant gothic letter emerging from the book, then another one, and here, and there… words, a sentence, sentences… I can’t tell how long I read in the book, but I read it all. I never had read words of wisdom of that kind before.

Sometimes, in the evening, when I go to bed, I close my eyes and open the book at any page. Usually, it doesn’t take a long time before I fell asleep, happy and relieved, with a certain – maybe even strange smile on my face…

Kind regards

Hi Markus!

I won't talk about the picture this time, I'm sure you know I love it.
I just tell you I just finished a book yesterday, you probably know that feeling of dissapointment when you would read further if there was more but you know there couldn't be written more, the story is ended. You're looking for something that you know it does not exist. You described this feeling of empty space in my mind and heart perfectly, in the right moment wether this was your intention or not.
And at the same time, you wrote a story making the same feeling that I would read further if...
This was the most complete experience I've recieved here so far, thank you very much!

Best regards,

Hallo Markus,

Hi Markus

Again a very nice abstract from you and also, this time, a very beautiful story.
Just like Nick, right now when i'm writing this comment, i too have a smile on my face :)
These two - the story and the picture go indeed very well together and are both presented so nicely by you.
The picture itself is gorgeous, with that thin leaf surrounded by ice layers itself. Its texture with surely disintegrate once the ice will melt, just like the book if someone would have chosen to open it.
Very beautiful details, lovely colors and contrast. But there is one thing that i might have changed: the centered composition...
Anyway, very nicely done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

When I was 6 or 7 years old I usually look through the half melted and frozen again ice and imagine different things. It was many years ago, but I remember it was so interesting.
Nice picture Markus

Una buena nota.

Hi Markus,

This is a very well thought out and beautiful compositon. I'm not much a person for words so I wouldn't be that interested in reading "The Leaf", but I'd happily spend an hour of two looking at your picture of one. Great posting.

Hallo Markus,

Hello Markus,
The frozen leaf makes a stunning impact in midst of all the ice!
The subjects combine the change of seasons well, as the frosty winter comes after the colours of autumn...
Well framed, good details!

Hi Markus,
when i first saw your picture makes me remeber a book i read when a was a child: "the autumm of Freddy the leaf". It´s the story of a leaf, what it feels when the autumm is approching and knows that must died. It´s a really nice book, about feelings.
About the picture... simply great. Lovely composition: I like the idea of the water moving and the leaf and the ice like steady.
have a nice day Markus!

Hello Markus !
I liked your last picture with ice, but now I see that there are many moreof them ! In this one I like the contrast betwenn the warm colors of the leaf and the cold ice. Excellent details, nice composition, wonderful colors and exposure, and I also liked reading your note, it is beautiful. Very well done !

Hi Markus,

I really love your series of ice art - beautifully seen and full of originality and artistic merit - as you know I also strive to see things where things aren't normally there to be seen, and you do this extremely well.

Your accompanying prose is also inspiring and thought-provoking - great work my friend.

Dream on Markus!! What a story :))))
And here's your Leaf:

"Caught in icy splendour
Frozen to the core
Waiting for the sun to come
to open up the door..."

Hi Markus,
great composition with wonderful colours, simply a beautiful picture, bravo
kind regards
