Better known backyard visitors:

this unusually looking 10 mm long female fly is the Rhingia hoverfly (Diptera; Syrphidae; Rhingia campestris; Feldschnabel-Schwebfliege), appearing from April to October. It sits on Origanum vulgare that grows wild in my yard. The larvare grow in cow dung.

ID: it has the characteristic wing venation of Syrphidae. The snout, the rooflike held brown wings and the brightly brown scutellum tells it apart from other species.

Technical stuff: with ISO 400 I get already much grain (my Konica Minolta is old). Sunlight and macro twin flashes, a monopod did the job. In PS I had to: crop, sharpen, remove grain, remove a flower in the lower right corner.

Hello Dietrich. Excellent sharpness and details of this unique looking fly and well presented in vertical format. Looks stunning on the violet flowers. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hello Dietrich,

Excellent picture of this uncommon (at least for me) hoverfly. Good composition and POV. Good sharpness. Very nice colours. Perhaps is it worth to use NeatImage or other software to reduce the noise of the background.

Bonjour Dietrich
Amicalement Robi

Hi Dietrich,
Beautiful macro!
Nice colors!

Ciao Dietrich,
splendido primo piano di questo bel dittero!
Mi piace soprattutto l'ottima messa a fuoco su occhi e torace.

Hallo Dieter!

Hab herzlichen Dank

Hi Dietrich.
What a crisp sharp image of the insect with plenty attractive details. I like impressive diagonal composition, wonderful lighting and colours. Especially I like well illuminated BG what is so difficult at macro shooting. Bravo. Perfect macro job.

That is one weird bug! What a snout!

Hi Dietrich,
Very different looking hoverfly with that unique snout. I've not seen one like it here in Texas yet..That I can recall anyway.
Technically excellent, a very enjoyable visit :)
