Elegant Grasshopper Zonocerus elegans

This is taken from Gerhard's earlier entry as he says it so well - hope you don't haunt me me friend!. Please visit his pictures as he has some stunners

This elegant fellow belongs to the family Pyrgomorphidae or Foam Grasshoppers. It emits a nauseating yellow fluid when disturbed. Livestock avoid eating from bushes infected with these critters.

They are medium sized (28-50mm) with a black head and antennae with orange rings. They are a pest of irrigation farmers in RSA, damaging vegetables, fruit trees and grasslands. In tropical areas they infest cotton, cocoa, coffee and a variety of other crops.

Eggs lay in the ground for 6 months, hatching in spring. They reach maturity in 75 days. The males also produce sounds during aggressive interaction.

Taken at the dam - shown in an earlier post. I then cropped and sharpened, added contrast and resized for the site

Please crit and comment. Thanks. Tim

Tim, Stange and colorful grasshopper captured very well..It's a great pose as it hangs on precariously to this thin blade of grass..Wonderful color scheme..Well done!

Garish color is just perfect for this insect. Great shot!

Excellent macro Tim.
Is this the fully grown adult or an immature specimen?
I love the colours, even on the grass stalk.

Thank you very much Tim. Lovely Grasshooper.

A stunning shot, Tim. The colors on this grasshopper are beautiful and very unusual. I also like the way the insect is curved on that twig. Great pose and excellent composition. The details are very sharp as well. Excellent work!

NP. :) Lovely shot, Tim. No nits! Just a pleasure. Was this taken with the rings?

This is indeed a pretty specimen, Tim.
Exceptional colors on this guy, that give him good camouflage on the particular blade of plant he is clinging to.
A wonderful photo and great capture, thank you.

Hi Tim
I am amazed at the quality you and Gergard pull out of that lens! I really like the poseod the beautiful / ugly critter here. I have a pic of him too somewhere, but not nearly as nice. TFS
PS, thanks for the offer to help with the PC, but it was too late at that time - got a new baby with the latest - now if I couls just swap the Nikon and lenses for your outfit . . . Wishful thinking.

An excellent capture, but that pose really makes it great. Detail and color are superb. A perfect OOF backround.. Nice Work!!

Struggle for live ... This is a super shot Tim! With very much originality Huge colours and perfect neatness.

Yes you are .... ;)
