Tockus leucomelas
(Lichtenstein, 1842)

The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Tockus leucomelas, is an African Hornbill. It is a medium sized bird, with length between 48 to 60 cm, characterized by a long yellow beak with a casque (only in males). The skin around the eyes and in the malar stripe is vivid red-coloured.

They present white belly, grey neck, and black back with abundant white spots and stripes. They feed mainly on the ground surface, where they forage for seeds, small insects, spiders and scorpions. Termites and ants are a preferred food source in the dry season.

Females lay 3 to 4 white eggs in their nest cavities and incubate them for about 25 days. Juveniles take about 45 days to mature. This hornbill is a common, widespread resident of the dry thorn fields and broad-leafed woodlands of inland southern to northeastern Africa. Frequently they can be sighted along roads.

Well, that funny bird again, managing to look so serious. A perfect capture from a good POV, in great frontal detail Annick, really would like to see one while flying, that capture would be something special...

hi annick!
this is a amazing bird!
nice capture with good
sharpness and fine composition!
well done!

What an amazing bird, the detail and colouration is superbly captured... the DoF is perfect, capturing the focus on the branches and the other branches fading into the background...This is my favourite image of yours I have seen for a long time...just a stunning image...TFS...

Hi Annick . A big name for a big bird. its easy to see why he is called this with his yellow bill which you have captured so well with fine detail and sharp focusing. a nice low pov looking up to the bird. well done TFS.

Very good in all aspects. Agree with previous posters. You can't have studio background in real wildlife photos like with those shot on captive birds. Good work!

Hello Annick,

Great composition! I really like it ;)

You have way too many great photos, but this one is one of my favorite. Everything is just perfect. I only seen one Hornbill when I was in Africa and couldn't get a good photo of it. What I love most here is the composition.

Bonsoir Annick
Toujours autant de finesse dans vos compositions, et la qualité technique de la photo est encore irréprochable, même si je crois me souvenir d'une photo plus amusante de cet oiseau dans votre galerie : il indiquait la direction à suivre.

Hi Annick, this bird has that exaggerated look they give cartoon vultures with that huge beak and those very vivid yellow eyes. You have found him in a good setting to show him off nicely, with very good sharp detail and colour. The portrait format works well for this pose.

Thanks, John

Hallo Annick,
Ik loop weer wat achter wat het bekijken van foto's betreft. Deze kan ik absoluut niet overslaan. Wat een prachtig natuurlijke foto in een fantastische compositie.

All of your photos being so good, Annick, it is difficult to pick one to comment on. After much hesitation, this is the one I prefer on this page. Nice composition and POV. Colours are pleasingly saturated. Good texture in the plumage. And of course, great sharpness and detail. Now why can't my photos be that good!

Hi Annick. I love the colours in this with the many shades. I also like how well it's framed. A great shot! TFS Trevor
