I think it's one of the most beautiful butterflies in Europe. I've seen it only once but now I know why it's endangered species. When I've met this butterfly it was so lazy but eminent - just like a king ;-)
I think in all countries in Europe it's protected species.
Caterpilars fees on different species of Sedum - usually Sedum album.

Hi Chris,
Another magnificent butterfly shot and this really looks like the most beautiful of all. Very impressive sharpness and colours and the backlighting on its wings make them glow. The fact that it is an endangered species makes this shot even more commendable. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Chris,
I really love this butterfly and it is very rare here too. It only occurs along a small stretch of the Baltic Coast and on the Isle of Gotland. You've managed to get a very nice close shot here showing great details of the nearly transparent wings and the beautiful pattern. Lovely colours too and a fine soft background that makes it stand out.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hello Chris,
you show an 'old' sharp and brilliant picture of P. apollo.
The hairy body and the wing scales are nicely seen.
Cropping is a bit close, in my opinion.
Best wishes, Peter

Very cool shot...wonderful how well you exposed the white in the bright sunlight. Very artistic composition. Great colors. Good stuff!

Bonjour Chris
Bravo pour la pose de cet 'Apollo', les teintes sont très belles.
Il est très très rare en France.
On ne le voit que dans l'extrême sud est.
Merci
à bientôt
Laurent
