Early spring in the backyard:

The picture shows a 7 mm big predaceous bug larva of the European assassin bug (Heteroptera; Reduviidae; Rhynocoris (Rhinocoris) iracundus; Rote Mordwanze) that I found under the dead oak leaves, activated by the warm sun rays. You will notice the impressive stiletto-like mouthparts with which they pierce the cuticle of prey insects. I hope to meet the bugger again when it is adult and up to 17 mm long.

I did this macro in backlight (using the evening sun) and filled in with the macro flashes to avoid harsh contrast. Some juggling in PS was necessary.

Hello Dietrich,
Excellent macro of an Assasin Bug nymph.
The technical standard is superb and I like the way you used the fill-in flash against the light, which not only helped the exposure but also allowed you to achieve a great DOF.
Thanks for sharing this 'beauty' my friend, and enjoy your Easter vacation!
Ivan

Hello Dietrich,
An excellent macro shot of this insect. TFS and regards,

Congradulations. I liked most the soft curve of the leaves and the antennae, it would be great if we had seen some more of its texture. The details are very good, but the bug is very 'shiny'.

Hello Dietrich,

Nice picture of this nymph. Good POV, DOF and sharpness. Good lighting and colours. These insects are strange with their "broken" antennae.
Cheers,
Mariki

Nochmals Frohe Ostern

Hi Dietrich!

Very fine macro with most of the bug in focus!
It really is assassin-like-looking! Does it change colour when it become an adult or does it stay like this?

The backlight makes this an even more intresting picture, in contrast to the dark "abyss" under the leaf in the downright corner. It's almost as if the bug crawled out down from hell.

Thanks for showing us this!

and thank you for your comments on my photos, greatly appriciated.

Regards,
Johannes

Hi Dietrich.
What a nice specimen have been pictured by you. I have never seen this colourful creature. As usual macro equipment was used perfectly, DOF is great as ell as the lighting. Bravo and kind regards.
Alexei.
