We (my gf and I) found this Jackdaw when we were walking towards the Cormorant Colony, of which I posted a picture about a week ago. This Jackdaw had just been busy washing in a ditch and was still wet. He was really minding his own business and didn't care we were there. I think it's a lovely bird and I am happy we got a good shot of him. This picture was taken close to were I live.

Jackdaw (Corvus monedula):

info from http://www.arkive.org

The jackdaw is a lively, diminutive member of the crow family. It appears to have totally dark plumage from a distance, but on closer inspection it can be seen that it is dark grey in colour with a lighter grey nape and sides of the neck. It actually is quite a beautiful bird. The beak is short and slender, the eyes are a unique pale blue, and it walks with a quick 'jaunty' step, all of which allow this bird to be distinguished from the carrion and hooded crows or the rook. Males, females and juveniles are similar in appearance. The name 'daw' for this bird has been used since the 15th century; it is probably imitative of the call, but also means 'simpleton'. 'Jack' is often used for small animals, and, like knave, means rogue, yet it may also be derived from another call, 'tchack'. This bird is indeed smaller than both the rook and the carrion crow, and is a renowned thief. This bird breeds in buildings and cavities in houses, as well as in parks, woodlands with hollow trees, and on sea cliffs.

Lovely shot Pieter, I really like this one. Great pose and a wonderful perch. Excellent shot, very well done.

Hi Pieter. I am not very interested in birds, but they always have a character in your shots. Great quality in this one, and very strong contrast of light and colour with the background. Only a personal opinion: I would personaly crop a bit tighter. TFS.

Magnifique Pieter !
Profondeur de champs très bien géré, sujet bien détaché.
Bravo !

Fantastically captured. Great detail. The ruffled feathers are fantastic, you can tell he had a good wash! A stunning shot with excellent composition. Well done!

Lot's of presence and expressive pose. Very well caught on this pole (obviously damaged by the hammer, but looking great as an echo to the shaggy Jackdaw :-). Superb background and very good image quality. Very good one, Pieter.

Hey Pieter, this is stunning. He's just minding his own business - yeah! His feathers look as bad as the fence post he's standing on. Excellent capture, I love it. Bravo!

hello:) I like this photo:) becoz of details and POV:) really this black bird looks very cute:)

You have an excellent portrait of this one!
Sharp image, great colour, nice background.

Hi Pieter, lovely shot of this Jackdaw, its a bird I've been trying to get a decent shot of and I'm not 100% happy with any of my attempts yet. If you could have, it would have been great to get a lower POV but it is still a great shot: lovely detail, exposure and BG. Great moment and you caught it with flair. Well done :)

Hi Pieter
I visited a part of your gallery and I found excellent photos. Congratulations.
