Hi Gary, welcome to TN. I know you said go easy but I will give you my views. Firstly it's a nice colourful shot and a good point of view. The insect has no sting - it's a hoverfly (probably Syrphus ribesii). The focus is a little soft but you can make you life a little better by increasing your DOF, F2.8 is too shallow for macros. There is also some overexposure on the background petals. I hope you take my comments as constructive. Look forward to more of your work.
HI Gary, welcome to TN. And my first bee turned out to be a hoverfly too. I'd NEVER heard of them before, but at TN, if you are happy to accept the critiques, you will learn heaps and have fun. There are many very helpful people here (like Paul, PDP) who can teach us a lot. So hang on and keep shooting with that camera!

Hey, Gary, welcome to Trek N.
Yep, everyone here likes to improve their photography and where else will one find that opportunity.
Paul has said all I can say, O.E, F9.0 or above and focus.
Overall though, you did well on this effort and using a compact, one above mine with shutter delay etc.
So, your composition is fine, keep posting, your pics will improve the more you shoot. :) :)

Hi Gary, nice close-up for the first post.
It's little overexposure and soft but nice colours and well composed. As mention you need a higher f-stop for a better DOF.

A very good closeup. There may be a little overexposure, but I think the trade-off for that is the nice highlighting of the fuzzy body of this hoverfly. Hope you stick around and do more postings. As was already stated, there's a wealth of information here on Trek Nature.
