[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last from first serie of Romanian pictures. Mud volcanos from Piclele Mari/Piclele Mica area.

After Slanic's karst we drove to mud volcanos area - really martian landscapes without any sight of plants on quite large territory. Few small but very interesting volcanos and many small valleys or canyons. Nearby nice peat moor was placed which we visited later. Just near volcanos was area with many fossils of molluscs - I found kilograms of them ;-)

The term mud volcano or mud dome is used to refer to formations created by geologically excreted liquids and gases, although there are several different processes which may cause such activity. Temperatures are much cooler than igneous processes. The largest structures are 10 km in diameter and reach 700 metres in height.

About 86% of released gases are methane, with much less carbon dioxide and nitrogen emitted. Ejected materials often are a slurry of fine solids suspended in liquids which may include water (frequently acidic or salty) and hydrocarbon fluids.

In Azerbaijan, eruptions are driven from a deep mud reservoir which is connected to the surface even during dormant periods, when seeping water still shows a deep origin. Seeps have temperatures up to 2–3 °C above the ambient temperature.

Approximately 1,100 have been identified on land and in shallow water. It has been estimated that well over 10,000 may exist on continental slopes and abyssal plains.

A mud volcano may be the result of a piercement structure created by a pressurized mud diapir which breaches the Earth's surface or ocean bottom. Temperatures may be as low as the freezing point of ejected materials, particularly when venting is associated with the creation of hydrocarbon clathrate hydrate deposits.

Mud volcanoes are often associated with petroleum deposits and tectonic subduction zones and orogenic belts. Hydrocarbon gases often are erupted.

I never knew that they had mud volcanoes in Romania.

I didn't know that there are such things in Romania. The photo along with the note is great source of information.
As for the shot - it's hard to show hole with mud in some special and beautiful way, but these photo is good (I just have feeling that there is only something wrong with the horizon).

Although the subject is very interesting, I find the image with a lack of contrast this time, maybe a bit sad. The note is perfect, very interesting (I had no idea about this ones) and decribes perfectly what you are showing. Thanks.

Wow Greg, those notes are good. AS I was reading them I was imaginoing the place might be a bit like our Rorotua with its bubbling mud pools and geizers. But this is on a much larger scale and rotorua has no petroleum deposits. So would all those hillocks in the BG have eruped like this mud pool in the front? Good one! Very interesting thank you.
