Today I present this beautiful butterfly. Somehow I tend to overlook this species though I had posted an open-winged shot many days back (which is very difficult to get). These are very busy butterflies and do not sit still so getting a proper shot is difficult. I found this one early morning trying to dry itself and as it was sitting at an inconvenient place I had to take the shot blinded and one-handed. The strong light saved me but I wish I had my f value right. Anyway, hope everyone like it.

The Tailed Jay (Graphium agamemnon) is a predominantly green and black tropical butterfly that belongs to the swallowtail family. The butterfly is also called Green Spotted Triangle, Tailed Green Jay or the Green Triangle. It is a common, non-threatened species native to India, Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia and into Australia. Several geographic races are recognized.

It ranges from Southern India to Saurashtra, Northern India (Kumaon to Assam), Nepal, Sri Lanka, Andamans, Nicobars, Bangladesh, Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Kampuchea, southern China (including Hainan), Taiwan, South East Asia to Papua & New Guinea, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, and Australia (northern Queensland).

Strong and restless fliers, they are very active butterflies and flutter their wings constantly even when at flowers. They are seldom seen drinking from damp patches. The males are particularly fond of feeding from flowers such as Lantana, Ixora, Mussaenda and Poinsettia. The females are more likely caught when looking for foodplants or laying eggs.

Tailed Jays are active throughout the year but their abundance depends upon the local monsoon and availability of the larval host plants. The butterflies generally fly among the tree-tops but descend to ground level in search of flowers or host plants. Because of their relatively fast life cycle (just over one month from egg to adult), Tailed Jays are multivoltine and may produce up to 7–8 broods per year.

It has been noted in one instance to be attracted to lights at night.

Once found primarily close to wooded country where there is a fairly heavy rainfall, the Tailed Jay is now very common at low elevations and regularly seen in gardens and urban areas due to its foodplant, Polyalthia longifolia (False Ashoka or Mast Tree), being widely used as an ornamental tree. The eggs are pale yellow and are laid singly on the underside of young leaves, and hatch after 3–4 days.

Hello Sumon,

A wonderful shot. Very good sharpness. Despite the difficult conditions, you managed to capture this butterfly very well. Good-handled light and splendide colours.

Hello Sumon,
Thank you for sharing another spectacular butterfly from India. Your image has superb sharp details, fine color, and it's well composed.
Well done as always. Richard

Hi Sumon,
Nice DOF, color, and sharp details..Looks like the light was hard, but managed the exposure well.
If they're like the swallowtail b-fly, they rarely slow down..Sounds like this guy gave you a run for the money ;}
A beautiful species you offer us today mf.
Well done,

Hi Sumon

Good early morning catch, but even then the light looks harsh..lol, the frustrations of photography. We have a similar species here near Sydney, G. macleayanus. I have seen them many times but only have poor shots, they never stay still, you were lucky.

The green on the butterfly's wings matches with the nature's green to perfection in this excellent shot, Sumon.
I know how difficult it is to get this species sit still. Even while it is settled, it keeps on shaking its wings. You have got it in perfect sharpness. The colours are very pleasant to look at.
Thanks and all the best.

Wow! dada,
This is an awesome shot...I love the sharpness and the details you've captured!

Well managed exposure. Excellent color composition and BG matching.
Best regards,

Hi Sumon!

It looks as if the wings of the butterfly would have little holes that let the green grass shine through! It's a surprising and well composed picture that captures the spectators interest. And, as usually, so well accompanied by interesting and instructive notes.

Kind regards

Hello Sumon,
Great sharpness, lighting, POV, composition and Bg make this image of a Tailed Jay very fine and a joy to see.
Thanks for sharing it!
Best wishes, Ivan

I can see where you would have difficulty....at least I would...the greens in the background give this image a real job for the eye brain connection. It almost demands that you look at it:-)! I am happy for you that you were able to capture it and frame it so well as you do. Very nice Sumon. This is what makes TN so much fun for me!

Hi Sumon

Fabulous shot of the beautiful Tailed Jay.
nicely composed with a great POV and a lovely closed wing pose.
Superb details and DOF.
The colours are excellent, the lime green on the wings looks great with all the lime green in the Bg etc.

Hello Sumon. Just perfect and got to go into my favorite and personal theme. Thanks for sharing this flawless shot. Best regards. Jusni

Despite all your complaints Sumon, you have provided us yet again with an excellent shot. This is a beautiful butterfly. I've never seen colouring like this on a butterfly. The browns and greens, do they serve as a camouflage? The crop is good, with good position, detail is sharp and colours on the butterfly are excellent. I also like this depth of field where you show excellent focus on the butterfly, while still providing a muted display of the background.

Thanks, John

Ciao Sumon,
un altro eccellente scatto si aggiunge alla tua magnifica galleria.
Complimenti sinceri,

Hi Sumon,
This on almost looks like it has holes in it's wings. Excellent shot!! Great colors, details and POV. If this is the result even after you didn't have a clear view, I would say this is excellent work.

Beautiful butterfly, you capture so sharp. It's a wonderful shot.
