This is a Hoverfly I found a few days ago resting on a blade of grass :-)

Can anyone identify this Hoverfly?

In the mean-time here's some info on Hoverflies in general:

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.

As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects.

Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year, and so aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognized as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for use in biological control. Some adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.

About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described. Hoverflies are common throughout the world and can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

Hoverfly larvae prey upon pest insects, including the leafhoppers which spread some diseases like curly top. Therefore they are seen in agriculture as a natural means of reducing the risk of diseases like curly top.

Gardeners, therefore, will sometimes use companion plants to attract hoverflies. Those reputed to do so include alyssum, Iberis umbellata, statice, buckwheat, chamomile, parsley, and yarrow.

Thanks!!!

Hi Joe.
Extreme macro shot. You have used so long lens system and have got extremely shallow DOF. Despite of that portrait of hoverfly is very impressive. Eye patter and texture of the head are reproduced perfectly. Flash work and colours are superb too. Have you cropped an image. Shorter distance the shallower DOF. In such cases I take subject from longer distance for getting larger DOF and than apply a crop. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

Hello Joe
This is a very impressive macro indeed..Stunning details.
You have a very shallow dof for f16 though..Not that your focussing isnt brilliant at all!!
How are you finding the 180 sigma?..and combined with the convertor?...Im interested as I am thinking about buying one.
A stunning capture and My hat is tipped to you Sir.

Hi Joe,
Excellent detail seen in the face & eye segments..I like your POV.
The light/color and OOF green BG, along with the leafs surface FG make it great :)
What R U using for flash BTW?
I don't think most people know how hard it is to pull this off.
Very well done,
Howard

Hi Joe, amazing portrait with superb details, splendid focus and wonderful sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Joe,
a fine macro work with good sharpness and fine details where it counts. The DOF will be quite shallow with this settings,
a converter with a long macro-lens, nothing unusual with that.
You did well with manual focus or did you used the tape-trick?
Well composed with a nice POV and good handle wiht the built-in flash.
Well done, young friend.
Have a nice weekend.

Your macros area awesome! Always the best!!!!!!!!!!

Good macro work, Tom.
You can count the eye particles...
TFS
