[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was taken at Stocker's Lake a weeks ago. We were having a rest at a small cafe and this little Chaffinch flew on to a nearby fence post.

I hope you like it!

Latin name
Fringilla coelebs

Finches (Fringillidae)

The chaffinch is the UK's second commonest breeding bird, and is arguably the most colourful of the UK's finches. Its patterned plumage helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers. It does not feed openly on bird feeders - it prefers to hop about under the bird table or under the hedge. You'll usually hear chaffinches before you see them, with their loud song and varied calls.

Where to see them
Around the UK in woodlands, hedgerows, fields, parks and gardens anywhere.

When to see them
All year round.

What they eat
Insects and seeds.

The theme is overall brown. It reminds me of something...not Girl Scouts which wear that colour uniform over here...at least back in the day...but of some else..perhaps the almost universal earth tone. for whatever it is worth, that colour really enhances this image Joey! Well done sir! And another tip of the hat...why don't I just give you my hat?:-)

Hello Joe,
Fantatsic capture, beautfiul vivid colors, nice clarity and superb details in the plummage, wonderful sharpness and excellent depth of field, the background is lovely, very nice light and great pose.

hi joe,
jolie prise de ce pinson, j'aime les détails du plumage et ses couleurs naturelles. La dof est juste un peu faible sur les pattes.

Hi Joe,

Excellent shot of the Male Chaffinch.
Nicely composed with a good POV and a nice profile pose.
Very nice details on the whole bird
Lovely earthy colour tones too.
I always think their beak look like they are made of steele.

A charming shot, excellent poise from the subject and all around nice feel.

What a stunning shot, Joey, it is perfect, sharp and beautiful! I could almost touch the soft feathers, there is nothing wrong with this picture, it is fantastic. Thanks!

Hi Joe

I have to come to England some time to go out with you and the other guys overthere.
I'm getting more and more envious looking at all the great uploads from you and the others around there.
This one is no exception to those beauties.
Great frame filling image of this wonderful Finch.
Love the colors, details and soft BG.
Only small nitpick this time is the fact that I would like to have seen a little more DOF to get the legs of the Chaffinch in sharp focus also.
Nevertheless, excellent work again. TFS my friend!!!

Cheers, Harry

Hi Joe

Great shot - excellent framing and isolation of the bird. I like the uniform OFF BG - it really helps bring out the detail in the bird.
