Hello again everybody,

Here is a story: for a couple of days i thought i wasn't going to have a dSLR anymore.

I was shooting Monday at the thermal pond near my hometown and i had my camera set with my long lens - the Sigma 70-300mm on it, all mounted on the tripod. As i was moving around, looking for nice dragonflies or whatever, my phone rings and i put the tripod down and reach for my pocked to see who it is. Top-tip here: make sure your tripod is very stable in moments like this...i didn't :(
As i turned around to hear better since it was rather windy, i just heard a big BANG behind me - my camera fell, together with the tripod, on concrete and into the water - as seen in the drawing from the Workshop.

I immediately jumped in after it but water had already gone in the camera so that was obviously not working anymore. The lens was completely broken, too.

So, assessing the damage, i was all set to go to Budapest (much closer to me than Bucharest), to the Canon service, to see if anything could be done to salvage the body.

Yesterday morning, after filling-up with gas, exchanging currency and canceling everything i had to do home, we got in the car and headed for the border. Now since most Romanians are Orthodox (me included), we celebrate Easter this Sunday. And since "things" have the habit of returning from the dead on this holiday, when i checked my camera again (just for curiosity, 2 km from the border), it surely came through and functioned perfectly :))

How's this for a story? :)
Yes...i know... he lens is totally broken so there is nothing i can do about that...but at least i still have a body and my other lens and i can yet take more photos :)

This photo here was one of the last ones i took with the very nice Sigma 70-300mm and (in case you didn't already know) it's of a pair of Ischnura elegans - or the Blue-tailed Damselfly.

I know Alexei knows this feeling and since he's Easter is probably now, too, this is a small dedication for him.
[We are now both without this nice lens, my friend :( ]

Take care and thanks for visiting.

Hi Horia
A great story, especially for me as a fellow Canon 400D owner! A great picture with good detail. These dragonflies are gymnasts in disguise!

Hi Horia

Amazing story - you were very, very lucky, although I have the same experience with mobile phones. Is there no hope for the lense? My 300 2.8 is still away being repaired :(

Lovely shot - great POV with great focus.

Hi Horia,

You last photo is a beauty though, classic Horia Bogdan. Excellent sharp detail and DOF...very well done.

Hi Horia!!
Well you were both extremely lucky!
1. For finding a pair of mating damselflies and getting an awesome shot of them while we have NONE AT ALL yet and 2. that your camera body is fine! Phew! I am very sorry to hear about your lens though :*-(
Excellent note explaining it all really very well! The drawing is great! :-)
Very fine image of this pair of reproducing damsels!
Superb sharpness and clarity.
Excellent DOF too.
I found an Alderfly laying eggs the other day and they're quite similar to a damselfly in their ways so maybe we'll be getting some soon! Fingers-crossed!

I hope everything works out my friend!
Will be camping in the New Forest in the time you're coming over so may be able to meet up with you!

Cheers mate!

Hi Horia,

It is sad to lost your lens.
Good foto of this wheel, sharpness and colors and pov and dof are great.

Hola Horia, excelente composición, nitida, con buen color y luz, el fondo perfecto, hace resaltar mas el motivo. ¡EXCELENTE MACRO! Un saludo

Hello Horia
My heart goes out to you on the damage of your equipment...Cameras and lenses are by no means cheap and take a lot of hard work to replace...I hope the phone call was important!! but I bet it wasnt!!
Still there is good news that the camera is Ok and saved you a drive..(maybe you should tell Canon about this as they are always being knocked for no weather sealing on thier cameras and yours had a proper soaking)
Now for the picture..Well you and Alexei seem to be able to use this lense so perfectly that maybe you should both have a word with Sigma..You both have glossy mag quality pictures with thier equipment!!
Dof and everything in the pic is beyond reproach..Your usual standard!!
All the Best Fella
Paul

Hi Horia

Ouch, that's a real tough luck story my friend. Caution can never be over cautious. Sorry to hear about your loss, but at least one good part of the story is that the camera bounced back. Remarkable.

One of your last captures from your Sigma also turned out to be a great winner. This is an excellent shot by any standards. Amazing clarity in the details and of course the BG is just superb.

Great work MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Lovely dedication to Alexei. He is a fine chap and a great contributor to this site.

Wow Horia, what a story happened to you! I can see you go into the water to save your gear, ouf. Incredible the camera came back to life as Canon cameras are not tropicalized! Maybe a small miracle just for you that day, why not? Too bad for the lens too, hope you will be able to replace it soon. And the picture is amazing my friend, the damsels are transparent! It is beautiful, they are reproducing with grace and the background is perfectly blurred. Very nice and good luck!

Hi Horia,
Outstanding shot of these mating damselflies. Lovely blue colours and immaculate sharpness. Excellent DOF and a well chosen POV to portray them. Great image but I am saddened by the accident and your loss. You have given me a lesson too and I have to be extra careful henceforth. Anyway, you have produced a masterpiece here. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Horia,
What a tragic story! It's like leaving a little child unattended for a moment then you never know what might happen! I feel really sorry for you and hope you can soon get a new lens. Anyway, I'm glad your last capture using the Sigma were some beautiful damselflies! This is a brilliant capture, very sharp and in fine colours. A lovely composition too and with a fine non-distracting background.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Horia,
Sorry to hear such a story.
About the image...
Well done. Well composed. No distractions through for instance the neutral and soft background. Good moment.

Hello Horia,
Very sad to read of your accident, something that can happen to any of us. I hope that you will be able to replace your smashed Sigma soon.
Anyway this I. elegans in copulo is a fine image, the technical performance of your late Sigma being excellent and your skill in POV and composition complementing this very well.
Thanks for sharing this beauty my friend and I wish you more positive events in the near future.
Ivan

Hi Horia,
Perfect image! The soft non-distracting background really brings these damelselflies out in 3d eye-popping view. Very sorry to hear about your ordeal, but like you said at least the camera was safe. Well done and TFS.
Paul :)

P.S. I found the woodpecker I was looking for 2 days after I posted the puffin image, check it out here. You and a few others wished me luck, mustv'e had something to do with me finding one. Hope you like it.
