This spider is one of the only watery spiders of Europe.
Indeed, if it doesn’t live completely under water like the argyronete (Argyroneta aquatica), it passes most of its time in an adult state on its surface.
Spiderlings are more often found in dryness, higher vegetation.
Its nearly exclusive biotope is swampys areas, with pools of water.
It has 2 characteristic postures: it groups legs 2 by 2 and takes a sun bath on the plants in the immediate proximity of the surface of water, or the first 2 pairs on the surface of the pool.
This second posture is its hunting position.
This way, it detects the vibrations caused by the insects which struggle on its surface, or with the small aquatic animals (tadpoles, small fishes).
To nourish itself or when it is threatened, she can perfectly dive under the surface (this one did).
It is a spider of big size (up to 2 cm), and its characteristic dress comprises two clear bands on each side of the body, over all its length.
There is one second species, Dolomedes plantarius, unfortunately threatened, and registered on the IUCN red list.
The distinction is done by observing the sexual organs. Hitherto, I had only seen immature specimens.

This photograph is not technically perfect, but it is almost the only one I could take of this female with his egg sac. we can see a rainbow effect on the hairs of the clypeus (between the eyes and the cheliceras).
