[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I discovered this hummingbird's nest on a low branch on a tree behind my classroom. It is hard to say why she chose this very busy thoroughfare to make her nest (about 4 cm in diameter). Hundreds of elementary school children walk by every day. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for her and her two nestlings.

Cool fact: Originally found only on the Pacific slope from Baja California to San Francisco, Anna's Hummingbird has increased its population and expanded its breeding range in recent years to Vancouver, British Colombia, east to southern Arizona. This expansion has been abetted by the introduction of exotic flowering plants, especially Eucalyptus, red-hot-poker (Tritoma) and tree
tobacco (Nicotiana glauca), and by the proliferation of hummingbird feeders.

As is the case with other hummingbird species, male and female Anna's Hummingbirds associate only long enough for copulation. Responsibility for construction of the nest and care of the young falls exclusively to the female. During the breeding season, males and females occupy separate habitats. Males establish feeding territories on slopes in open chaparral while females build their nests in bottomlands that include evergreen trees, especially live oaks.

The breeding season begins in December and lasts until May or June. Males arrive first and begin defending territories associated with rich and dependable food sources. Females arrive a few weeks later and establish separate territories; they build lichen-camouflaged nests of made from plant down and spider webs. When the nest is partially built, the male performs his courtship display. First, he hovers before the female, then rises high, sometimes pausing to sing a thin, squeaky warble of a song before again diving toward her, tracing a deep arc and making a loud, explosive noise at the bottom of the dive. Incubation of the eggs takes about two weeks before the naked and blind nestlings hatch. After another three weeks, the young may leave the nest, although they remain dependent upon the mother for food for a few days. Juveniles rapidly develop territorial behavior, sometimes establishing their own feeding territories shortly after leaving the nests.

Description: Anna's Hummingbirds are iridescent bronzy green above and grayish white below, with a varying amount of green wash at the flanks. Males have a deep rose-red crown and gorget that extends to the sides of the neck. Females may have some red feathers at the throat, but none on the crown. Wings and tail are dark, with the female's tail feathers tipped with white.

I've never seen a shot of a hummingbird nesting before. It's gorgeous. What is its nest made of? I see leaves, grass, mud - it's almost as colourful as the bird itself and the bird is wonderful. Great clarity and your DOF/composition are spot-on. I think it's a fantastic shot. TFS :)
