Limnocharis flava
Other common names in English:
Sawah-flower rush, Sawah-lettuce, Yellow bur-head

Limnocharis flava is a clump-forming, emergent aquatic plant that is native to the American continent. The Greek words "Limno" and "charis" mean "pond" and "grace", respectively.

L. flava has triangular-shaped leaf and flower stalks and produces 'octopus-like' inflorescences consisting of up to 15 three-lobed yellow flowers. Its fruits are spherical and made up of cresent shaped segments that eventually split off, carried by water currents to disperse seeds to new locations.

Occurs in:
agricultural areas, ruderal/disturbed, wetlands
Habitat description:
L. flava inhabits shallow swamps, ditches, pools and wet rice fields, occurring usually in stagnant fresh water.

General impacts
If allowed to grow unchecked, L. flava may become a very invasive environmental weed of streams and wetlands. It has become a serious weed in rice fields, irrigation canals and wetlands in South-East Asia. Clumps of the weed provide a congenial breeding sites for disease-vectors, including mosquitoes, which encourages the spread of diseases such as Japan fever and dengue fever.

Thanks to Ori (Fragman) for the help with the ID.

nice pic of Limnocharis flava. TFS Ori

The light green, yellow and white all blend well. This image has retained exceptional tones.

Bien captados los blancos y un fondo muy adecuado. Cuidado encuadre y atractivo conjunto.
Un saludo Manyee y buen fin de semana: Josep Ignasi.

Hallo Manyee,

It is a very good photo of the flower! Very good way of rendering flower's petals color and especialy texture. I find interesting the lighting conditions rendering nice rich colors despite the white and yellow of the flower.

Thank you for sharing,

Hi ManYee

When I first saw the thumbnail in the gallery I did not look at the name of the photographer and thought it was one of Ori's postings as this is so typical of his work. Great was my surprise when I saw it was actually you who captured this beauty, but then reading through your notes I came to the last paragraph and there I saw that Ori actually assisted with the ID. That was when I noticed he did the 1st critique and the coincidence of the experience just made me smile.

Now the point I'm trying to make is that I have tremendous respect and admiration for Ori Sapir (fragman)'s floral contributions to this site and I have a high opinion and regard for your birds, animals, butterflies, etc., but just to point out the specific beauty of this posting by confusing it with one of Ori's flowers hopefully tells you something of my appreciation of this shot. Shucks, I hope I explained this one correctly and without being misunderstood so no one needs to go and take some malpitte to chill-out as I really mean this as a great compliment (chuckle).

The flower and the plant jumps out of the frame towards the viewer as the dark BG stands in absolute contrast to the brightly coloured subject. Actually the image can hardly contain this beautiful flower and it seems so real to me that I can almost smell it. Excellent details, lovely colours, an amazing composition all adds to the visual feast.

Great work and very well done and TFS.
