Giraffe / Giraffa camelopardalis

This photograph was also taken at the Kwamalibala waterhole, where we spend most of the 1st day when we recently visited the uMkhuze Game Reserve. I just liked the symmetry of the two giraffes, as they were drinking water, and in my personal opinion these animals are truly masterpieces in design. I must admit I fell in love with my own photograph when I saw these two on the camera's monitor screen. There was just so much harmony in this scene.

Once again I could have given you the detailed description of the enormous giraffe, but I wanted to make my note a bit different than the usual. Upon my research I found such a lot of interesting information about this fascinating animal and thought I'll share it with you by ways of a "Did you know?" trivia.

Did you know these interesting facts about the giraffe?

- The name giraffe is derived from the Arab word "Xirapha", which means "the one who walks very fast".
- Giraffes are very vulnerable when they drink and always look around carefully and make sure they have a firm footing before bending. The brain is protected by a special system of blood vessels from the sudden changes in blood pressure that come when raising and lowering the head.
- Luckily, giraffes have elastic blood vessels in their necks; this makes it possible for them to drink water from a stream, without fainting.
- When a giraffe splays its legs to drink water, it not only gives it more secure footing, the difference in height between the head and the heart is also reduced.
- All the veins and arteries in the giraffe's legs are situated close to the bones and the capillaries that reach the surface are very small. This prevents severe bleeding from superficial cuts and wounds.
- A giraffe can run at a speed of 56 km/h (35 mph). They have also been known to jump up to 1.8m (6 feet) high.
- A giraffe's heart is 10kg (24 pounds) in weight and 60cm (2 feet) in length.
- The hooves of an adult giraffe are about 30cm (12 inches) wide.
- If the giraffe had to breathe at the same rate humans do, the 3.5m (11½ feet) windpipe or trachea will suffer from windburn. Giraffes breathe at only a third of the rate that we do.
- Giraffes have exceptionally long tongues that are blue-black in colour, and about 45cm (1½ feet) in length. It is covered with thick saliva and is used to pull twigs and shoots into the mouth where it is held between the lower teeth and the thick hard pad in the upper jaw. Their tongues are prehensile which means that it can grab and hold onto objects.
- A giraffe's mouth is quite hard and also horny to enable them to eat thorny bushes with ease.
- Giraffes don't have upper front teeth or incisors but a hard pad where teeth would normally be. The leaves are then stripped off the twigs with a backward pull of the head. Up to 45 kilograms (99 lb) of leaves per day can be harvested this way to sustain its great bulk.
- They have a four chambered stomach and will regurgitate their food for additional chewing – similarly to a cow.
- They spend between 16 and 20 hours a day feeding.
- Extreme care must be taken when scientists catch giraffes for study or for capture for a zoo exhibit. If the scientists run the giraffe too long, the giraffe will suffer a heart attack due to its high blood pressure. Scientists typically target younger giraffes for this reason.
- Giraffe have seven neck vertebrae, each 30cm (1 foot) long. Because of their height they make a difficult kill for lions. A lion can die if kicked by a giraffe.
- Giraffes sleep for no more than 5 to 30 minutes in 24 hours. A giraffe seldom lies down; it can sleep as well as give birth while standing up.
- Giraffes are blessed with excellent eyesight. This helps them keep an eye on each other from a distance and are able to perceive colour.
- A female giraffe gives birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of approximately 15 months.
- A baby will fall approximately 1.8m (6 feet) during birth before hitting the ground. A baby will begin nursing within 1 hour, and will generally also begin walking within 1 hour.
- A giraffe is one of the animals that are born with a horn.
- Each giraffe has unique markings that distinguish it from others. No two giraffes have exactly the same makings. A giraffe's age can be calculated from its spots, as the darker the spots, the older the giraffe.
- Giraffes can go for weeks without drinking water but even so they still usually seek water every few days. Giraffes derive much of their water from the plants they eat.
- A male giraffe can tell if a female is fertile by tasting her urine. Male giraffes perform a type of dance to impress fertile females.
- The average life span of a giraffe in the wild is 25 years.
- At one time it was believed that giraffes were mute but they do make sounds. A form of communication used by giraffes is called infra sound and cannot be heard by humans. Giraffes do grunt and snort and sounds like the bleating of calves, and the bellowing of cows, have been heard.
- They have no tear ducts, although they have been seen crying.
- They have never been observed bathing.
- Giraffes are amazing animals. They are the tallest animals on earth. Even with their extreme height these animals are incredibly graceful and agile and are described as the most peaceful animals on earth.

I found the above facts very interesting and educational. I hope you find it the same. Source

Hi Anna,
Just as I saw this shot and opened it the first thing that struck me (even before i read your notes) was the symmetry. And rather i was thinking of the increasing number of compositions your present wherein(whether you have realised it or not) there is symmetry or a certian line up.Take "Double Delight", "Quenching the Thirst" or even "You wont get away with it...the first two being your recent posts.I think this is not an oft seen technique in shots here in TN, and perhps even without you knowing it, you must be getting drawn to this specialization. And i tell you this is a delightful form of photography to watch in wildlife.
As for the presentation here, it is another wonderful shot at the waterhole, where the majestic pair bends down as if in synchronised harmony.I love the way the texture and details on the camels have been enhanced by the sunlight falling on their rich golden and brown patterned body and the Bg stands away muted but definitley providing a sense of their natural habitat...
Very well done.
TFS & cheers...This to my favourites...

Hi Anna,
this is a gorgeous photo of the two giraffes with a nice out of focus back ground with just enough detail for reference and the pair are very well focused with much detail and excellent colour and yes I do enjoy this view very much.Thank you for this wonderful photo and the note that goes with it. Bob

Hi Anna,

A beautiful composition of these two giraffe's in there natural environment, the colours and detail in the patterns on these two are just stunning, excellent use of the 1/3rd rule with the placement of the water in the foreground taking up the lower 3rd, beautiful contrasting colours from the edge of the water though to the greenery of the foliage and finally to the trees in the background, just wonderful, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Hello, Anna.
I don't blame you for falling in love with this picture.
It is amazing.
The giraffes have such beautiful patterns, which you are showing with great sharpness. The light on them is fantastic., really bringing out their pretty colors. I love the parallel poses of these two giants, awkwardly splaying their front legs to get to the water. A real primoridal scene.
Just lovely.
TFS. : )

Ciao Maurizio

Good Cutting and Pasting Anna!!
No, you didn't fool me!
Great shot seeing the 2 giraffes in sync together. Like ballet, bowing together.
Those front legs have to twist to get so low.
Excellent capture, and yes, I am enjoying looking at them

Hi Anna,
Magnificent capture.I liked symmetric pose of giraffes a lot.Colors, sharpness, details, framing and composition are perfect as always.Excellent work!
Thanks for posting.

Hi Anna,
As you know I am Biologist and interested in mammalian systematics and evolution. Your photo is very interesting and important for me. As you mentioned Giraffes are very vulnerable when they drink. This is a problem for giraffes. On the other hand long body length is and advantage to reach more food on the top of the trees. They are between these two point, I mean, trouble while drinking and advantage to reach more food. Feeding and drinking thus place opposing environmental pressures on the length of neck and legs. This is called as stabilising selection.
Shortly, this photo really amazing. Colud you please let me use this beautiful photo in my lessens at the University.

Kind regards

Mustafa

Hi Anna,
What a cute, beautiful and perfect capture of these giraffes. Realy I also love the symmetry. Wonderful capture in all aspects my friend. Your notes are axcellent too. TFS.

Hi Anna,
i was suprised to read the reasoning behind the Giraffe's name..nothing to do with it's neck?!
Anyway, another splendid waterhole shot from you, you were lucky to catch these two in such a similar pose at the same time - however, you are responsible for the great quality, compo and detail - well done!
Paul

Dear Anna
What a beautiful, identical and most colourful image. I really fancy it and think it you have captured them in a lovely pose as well as in their natural surroundings. I found your notes very, very interesting and educational. This is indeed a very special animal. I must echo what you have mentioned in your notes that a giraffe is certainly the most graceful and peaceful animals on this planet. Thanks for sharing this lovely image of togetherness at the waterhole. I don’t mind you sharing more of this type of images with us. It makes the longing for the beautiful nature of South-Africa less.
Keep well.
Aaltjie

Good thing I had my cataract surgery Anna..or I would have believed your title...Reminds me of an old device..I forget what it was called but it held a card with two images in a small wooden holder and if you looked through it , the images appeared in 3D. I wonder if such a thing might be possible with an image in which they are very closet to twin pics...VERY neat image...Good show!
Bob

Wow! One is almost a mirror image of the other! Once again, lots of patience and being at the right place at the right time will get you shots like this.We make the mistake of briefly stopping at a waterhole and then driving on, often missing the animals about to arrive at the waterhole and give you shots like this!
Well done!

Hi Anna,

I think I'm seeing double!! Great timing to get this pair in identical poses. It can't be easy for a Giraffe to bend down to get water and you show us clearly how he does it. The front leg positions are wonderful. Beautiful colors and details of these gorgeous animals. A wonderful natural setting and a great shot.

Hello Anna,
Thanks for posting this beautiful image. You are very good in detecting symmetry in the wilderness:-).
Once again you posted an excellent waterhole event.
It is sharp, beautiful, full of light, educational and so forth.
I figured it is rather difficult to photograph giraffes. I mean often they look all the same. This one is different though.

Anna, the 'trivia' on Giraffe you have given in your note is extremely valuable and provides interesting information on this giant of an animal.
Despite their great height, I very much want to coddle them. They are so innocent looking.
I also admire the symmetry in this wonderful pair of Giraffes drinking at a water-hole.
The image is very beautiful and perfect in every technical respect.

Hi Anna,
I've been having a lot of that lately :)
Excellent image, the "duality" makes it most unique.
You know, I have to admit I'd never seen a girafee drink before..
The animals pose looks awkward and very vulnerable. Looks like it would take quite a bit of time for it to gather itself to elude capture from a predator.

Hi Anna

A terrific capture of these two lovely giraffes dinking peacefully at this nice waterhole.
The "syncron" of the two really makes your composition, i think, and so the timing here is simply outstanding!
The sharpness of the details is also great, especially considering the fact that you didn't take this with a $$$$ SLR :) So congrats to you on the good deal, too :)

Hello Anna. I am grateful to you for the interesting facts about giraffes. I can see the rhythm of synchronicity in this composition. Perfectly framed pair digging in the waterhole. Pleasantly exposed image with sharpness and details very well observed. I like the pleasant blurry background keeping good focus on the subjects. Thanks for sharing and very best regards. Jusni

Hi Anna
Your notes are very interesting. I've learned a few new facts today about Giraffes (this is what I love about TN). Your Giraffes are beautiful Anna. The colours, clarity and composition is excellent. You've captured a wonderful stance of these two drinking and spreading their legs to reach the water. Awesome!!

Hello Anna, what an incredible shot of these two giraffes drinking. This is the first time I've seen them drink. I always wondered how they did it. Reading the notes I see it is definitely not an easy task either. Very nice capture. The composition is beautiful, with very excellent colour and detail seen throughout.

Thanks, John

Hello Anna,

This well coordinated action is well captured!
I notice their technique with interest, even with a long neck it takes a special approach if the front legs are even longer...
A well composed presentation, super details and fine colours reproduction!

Hello Miss Piggy, I just love the little Piggy you use for your intro page! And I don't know about you but when I was a kid my favourite animal was the giraffe.. I have to say I still think they are superb, wonderful and mysterious creatures. This picture is fantastic, I just love to see them bent to drink water and we perfectly see their beauty. Plus, the notes are amazing and instructive, thank you very much Miss Piggy, you are wonderful!

Hello Anna

Ja veseker, dit lyk my ek het dubbel visie, en ons het nog nie eers begin kuier voor die rugby wedstryd vandag nie. Hierdie twee kameelperde is perfek gesinkroniseer.

Mooi so.

Groete
Rehanna

Anna,

What a view! A wildlife photographer's dream pose from the giraffes! The composition is good, allowing both to be in the frame. The clarity of the image is great and you display great detail and sharpness of the subjects.

Hi Anna,

The close-up point of view is showing the details and colors of the girafes drinking in the waterhole. The picture is clear and precise. The subject is well frame. the colors are enhanced by the good light. Have a nice day.

Dear Anna,
Thanks so much for showing this pair. This photo reminds me vividly of the farm: We bought 2 Giraffes and were allowed to watch the catching.

After the giraffes have been darted, they continue to run - until the drug has taken effect - and then they collapse. They have to be followed and their heads held up - their high blood pressure would prove fatal otherwise - and their heads covered with a hood.

It is quite amazing, how fast they run with their relatively thin legs - particularly downhill - and it becomes quite frightening if you are in front of them on foot.

During the big drought in the 90's I was carrying "perde blokkies" (I am not sure how to spell this) to their feeding place as well as Luzerne - and I used to wonder if they will stop in time or run me over...

We stuck individual handfuls of Luzerne onto the thorns of a bush, and fed the blokkies in a box fixed to a tree. Unfortunately the ostriches greedily surrounded the tree and ate the blokkies, the giraffes standing at a distance looking verloren. My husband had to put a fence around the tree - far enough to stop the ostriches reaching the food but allowing the giraffe to eat comfortably (+ a little gate for me to put the blokkies into the box)...

You mention in your notes the giraffes laying down.

One day, we saw the giraffes sitting down and thought, they were ill. Some frantic phone calls to wildlife experts reassured us: Giraffes do sit down - when they are relaxed - not fearing any danger from predators.

The are very interesting animals to watch from close - see your notes / interesting facts.

It is a wondrful trip down memory lane - looking at your photo and reading your carefully researched notes.

You did a big job!

Best Wishes and
Warm Regards
Ingrid
