Athene noctua (Tr:kukumav)
The Little Owl (Athene noctua) is a bird which is resident in much of the temperate and warmer parts of Europe, Asia east to Korea, and north Africa. It is not native to Great Britain, but was introduced in the 19th century, and is now naturalised there.

This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping is the barn owls, Tytonidae.

The Little Owl is a small owl, 23-27.5 cm in length. It takes prey such as insects, earthworms, amphibians, but also small birds and mammals. It is partly diurnal and often perches prominently during the day.

This is a sedentary species which is found in open country such as mixed farmland and parkland. It usually nests in holes in trees or rocks, laying 3-5 eggs which are incubated by the female for 28-29 days, with a further 26 days to fledging. Little Owls will also nest in buildings, both abandoned and those fitted with custom owl nest boxes. If living in an area with a large amount of human activity, Little Owls may grow used to man and will remain on their perch, often in full view, while humans are around.

Özellikleri [değiştir]Tüyleri üst kesimde koyu kahve üzerine küçük beyaz lekelerle kaplıdır, alt kısmında ise bu beyazlıklar geniş çizgiler halini alırlar. Sarı renk gözlerinin üstünde ona sert bir bakış kazandıran beyaz kaşlar bulunur. Alın kısmı ise düz ve alçaktır.


Yaşam alanı [değiştir]Kukumav yerleşik bir türdür. Kırsal bölgelerde tarlaların ve bahçelerin yakınlarında yaşar. Özellikle bu yeşillik yerleri sever, ancak çok yoğun ormanlık alanlarda yaşamayı da sevmez.


Beslenme ve üreme [değiştir]En önemli besini tarla faresidir ve ayrıca çeşitli küçük memeli ve sürüngenlerle de beslenir. Kukumav kuşları genellikle ağaçların gövdelerindeki kovuklarda ya da kayaların arasındaki oyuklarda kendilerine yuva kurarlar. Dişi kukumav üç ile beş arasında yumurta yapar ve 28-30 gün boyunca kuluçka donemi sürer. Kuluçkadan sonra yavru kukumavların tüylenip kendilerine bakabilecek hale gelmeleri 30 günü bulur.


Dağılımı [değiştir]Çin’den başlayıp Türkiye'nin de içinde bulunduğu Akdeniz Havzası ve Batı Avrupa'ya kadar uzanan geniş Avrasya coğrafyasında ılıman bölgelerde yayılmışlardır. Ayrica cesitli bölgelerde değişim gosteren alt türleri de vardır. Suriye'de Athene Noctua Lilith solgun gri-kahve renklidir, yine solgun renkli Athene Noctua Desertae Kuzey Afrika'da yaşar, Türkiye'nin de içinde bulundugu Güney Avrupa bölgesinde Athene Noctua Indigena ve Orta Asya'da ise Athene Noctua Bactriana alt türleri bulunur.

Great capture of a Little Owl taken from a fine POV in a superb pose. The technical qualities of this shot are top class and I like the composition with the extra space above the owl where he is looking up.
You must have been close to it to get such a sharp shot.

Hello Cahit,
I like the moment here and also the blurred background.
The decisive moment due to the way the little owl looks up and the compositional space above him..
The out-of-focus background contrasts very well with the razor sharp bird of prey.
I'm a bit puzzled about the perching but that is no major issue.
