Here is a picture of a Common loon taken at the Mauricie National Park in Quebec, Canada. This picture was taken from our canoe.

It is not easy to manage those black and white: we don't want the white burned but we want to distinguish the black tones... Really not evident!

Thank you for commenting it... :-)

Cool Facts
==========

The Common Loon swims underwater to catch fish, propelling itself with its feet. It swallows most of its prey underwater. The loon has sharp, rearward-pointing projections on the roof of its mouth and tongue that help it keep a firm hold on slippery fish.

Migrating Common Loons occasionally land on wet highways or parking lots, mistaking them for rivers and lakes. They become stranded without a considerable amount of open water for a long takeoff. A loon may also get stranded on a pond that is too small.

Loons are water birds, only going ashore to mate and incubate eggs. Their legs are placed far back on their bodies, allowing efficient swimming but only awkward movement on land.

The Common Loon is flightless for a few weeks after molting all of its wing feathers at the same time in midwinter.

Hola Michel,
preciosa captura,
buen foco y detalles...
colores magníficos,

Hi Michel

A difficult shot with the choppy water. Good sharpness and exposure. The loons plumage is excellent but it is somewhat lost in the pattern of the waves.

Chris

Hi Michael,

Excellent capture of this Common Loon which is here called the Great Northern Diver. I think that makes more justice for this magnificant bird. Great composition and POV, sharp details, good eye contact and nice colours. Very good lighting has recorded the details well.

Hi Michel.
What an interesting and unusual picture. First I am impressed with surprising water surface reproduction. Fine ripples are amazing. Image of the bird is superb despite the contrast colouration. I like widest DOF and crisp sharpness of the entire scene. Well done and my best regards.

Hi Michel,

Long time no contact:-) i like this beatiful loon on that trembling pond! Love those black strides on the amazing blue. Looks like a labyrinth game to find the way to castle or loon!

Best regards and sincere greetings,
Ersin

Dear Michel,
graphically exciting structures of waterwaves and the duck's patterns - it looks really surprising when seeing the image full size. I like the strictly limited set of blue, black and white with just one red spot - the eye. And I like the strictly rectangular composition in combination with those blue and black waves. A faszinating image.
Thank you! My best regards,
Peter
