Today I present a spider that I can’t identify. I’m fairly sure it’s a Huntsman from the family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae), and robably from the genus (Isopeda sp) but I’m not really sure. I have no reference books on Australian spiders and a search of the net has not been very successful, except for this site on (Australian spiders ) by Ed Nieuwenhuys which was quite good.
Anyway, I thought you might like to see this large spider that I disturbed while looking for dragonflies in a swamp near Moss Vale in the southern highland. He was curled up at the top of this bush in the early morning sun. Then he uncurled and posed for me, before jumping off the bush into the undergrowth.
Sparassidae: This family contains very large hairy spiders with all legs curved forwards so the spiders can move sideways as well as straight ahead. The family has 94 species, with the largest havoing a leg span of 160mm. The outer segments of each leg have dense scopulae which facilitate lateral movements. The typical body and leg colours are grey, brown and black, often with enough mottling to provide useful camouflage when the spiders are resting on bark surfaces. It is usual to find huntsman spiders under bark, although they will sometimes be found on the walls of man-made constructions.

Hallo Chris
If you consider a spider beautiful then this is indeed a beauty. I just love the way it draped itself over the plant. The pose in which you have captured it is really great. Focus, sharpness and framing is done expertly. Clarity of the fine bodyhairs is stunning. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.

hi Chris,

very good capture, I like the composition, tFS Ori
