Hello my Friends!
Almost one week ago I returned from Baltic states so it is time to show you something from this trip :>
I really have to say that it was a very intensive trip, some 4500 km by car, only 14 days to visit three countries. Too short period to see "everything" but enough to be sure that I will come back there again!!! :>

Today I would like to show you something really special and unusual - even if for the first view it does not look like... ;> A true nature phenomenon, which - I believe - is very rare, at least in Europe :>

This is Kaali meteorite lake localized in Kaali village, Saaremaa Island, W Estonia. This is the biggest and one of 9 craters-lakes known in this area.

Please, note very regular shape of this lake, it clearly suggests its unusual origin :>

And here are some facts about this unique place:

Diameter of the crater: 105-110 m

Diameter of lake: 30-60 m (depends of water level)

Depth of crater: 22m

Depth of lake: 1-6m

Age: some 4000 years

Mass of meteorite which formed lake: initial mass - probably 400-10000 ton, mass at impact - 20-80 tons

Speed of meteorite which formed lake: initial velocity upon entering the atmosphere - probably some 15-45km/sec, velocity at impact - 10-20 km/sec

Actualy this unique area is protected by the law.

By the way, I would be very interesting in any data about lakes formed by meteorites. If you know any other exaplmes of such lakes - please let me know! :>

Hello Radomir,
Interesting to see this meteorite crater from Estonia that is very well captured here. I like your POV and details and colours are excellent. Good note too. I wonder if there's any life in this lake?
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Radomir,
A great capture of a a meteorite crater and its small lake. Nice POV and composition to show nearly all of it.
Interesting to know that it was formed so recently, well after the last Ice Age.
Thanks for sharing this interesting and unusual image,
Greetings
Ivan

Hi Radomir. This is somthing very different but interesting is this a first on TN. Your interesting notes help to understand how it was made. i like the way the trees refect in the water. Well done TFS.
Nick..

Very interesting and well displayed. Thanks for the info.

Hi Radomir,
No doubt, an interesting and unique view, looks like a common pond but´s a meteoritic one. TFS

PD: there is something to see in my gallery.....:D

I've been looking at your shot for quite a while, trying to picture the impact. Must have been devastating even at quite some distance. The rock is small. The power comes from the tremendous speed.
such a interesting post (and note)

Interesting post Radomir,
Great job on the presentation/notes..The meteor has made a nice neat circle of the small lake..I wish one drop out back here..
I could use a small lake to attract the animals ;}
Well done!
Howard

Hi Radek,
A nice capture of this crater lake. I can't believe the force of impact that could have occurred. It gives me goose bumps. WOW. Superb composition and well presented. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Czesc Radek!

Nie nabierasz nas :-) ? A moze oni po prostu wykopali sobie ten staw :-) Zartuje. Bardzo ciekawy przyklad jeziora o nietypowej genezie. Mam nadzieje, ze w nastepnych postach pokazesz nam zamieszkujace w nim/kolo niego zwierzaki!

Hi Radomir, interesting view of lovely little lake, good light and colors, very well done, ciao Silvio

Witaj,
Interesujace miejsce i ciekawy opis jego pochodzenia.
Pozdrawiam, Pawel

Pozdrawiam
Adrian

nice to see something completely different at TN, TFS Ori

Czesc, Radomirze!
Pozdrawiam
Tadeusz

Hi Radomir.
I love Estonia (Tallinn). I visited it many times in Soviet period and had many friends there in Academy of Sciences. You also had found an amazing place and represented it skillfully with your firm taste and manner. Amazing cold rich colour palette and razor sharpness of all attractive objects and details of the scene. POV is great as well as the framing of the image. My best regards.
Alexei.

Serdecznosci,
