[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Auricularia auricula-judae (syn. Auricularia auricula, Hirneola auricula-judae) is commonly known as Judas's ear fungus or Jew's Ear, the name from which it derives the "judae" in its scientific name, or as the jelly ear fungus. This jelly fungus is conspicuously ear shaped, ranging from purple to dark brown or black in color with a rubbery texture, and most often found on dead elder trees but also on elms. It was said that Judas hanged himself on an elder tree, which is the origin of the name. [2]

This species is used often in Asian cooking. In Chinese, it is called 木耳 (pinyin: mů ěr, lit. "wood ear" or "tree ear") or 黑木耳 (pinyin: hēi mů ěr, lit. "black wood ear"), and in Japanese it is called kikurage (キクラゲ, lit. "tree-jellyfish"). Auricularia polytricha (cloud ear fungus), a closely related species, is also used in Asian cooking.

Hi Jozsef

Wahta great shot, this one really does look like its common name. We get this species here to but this is an excellent specimen

Good background

Chris

Dear Jozsef
What an interesting photograph this is. It completely looks like a human’s ear captured from the side. The texture of the fungus is very smooth and almost velvety. I like it very much as the detail is displayed very clearly and with taste. The dirty pink colour is also very nice and displays well against the branch of the tree. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Aaltjie and Hettie

Hello Jozsef,

Scrolling trough the fungi-archive I discovered this beautiful mushroom. I found the same fungi (not so beautiful as yours)kind one week ago at The Vlietlanden in the SW part of the Netherlands. It's a very interesting history about this fungi. Back to yours. Razorsharp, natural colors and a very good compo. Your POV is alo good. I like this position for fungi photographing very much.

Thanks for sharing. Greeting and TFS Bob
