NEW ZEALANDíS SILVER FERN (Cyathea dealbata)

Today was wet and windy, and I went out a few times along the cliff between the beaches to take photos between showers. The plants were all wet and I liked the look of this silver fern growing happily with the end of the frond broken off but still attached. The colour of the end part, especially wet, was quite a deep reddish brown. The water was making the frond droop rather heavily.

I have written up quite a bit about this fern, so I really donít want to bore you too much.

The Silver Fern is New Zealandís national symbol. It is widely used in New Zealand to signify New Zealandness. The Fern is a symbol of strength, unity and success. It is worn with great pride by the nation's representatives.

The silver fern is the only tree fern with silver undersides to its fronds, making a spectacular sight in the moonlight. When these fronds are laid silver side-up on the forest floor, they make ingenious track makers - a helpful pointer for trampers lost in the bush after dark. Silver fern fronds were also traditionally preferred by Maori for comfortable mattresses. So if youíre lost in a NZ bush remember to place these silver fern fronds like arrows asking for help, and also pick a few to sleep on for a comfy sleep while waiting for help to arrive.

I like the reddy brown against the rich green. Nice shot Janice. Hasn't the weather been horrible. Let's hope it is better for us on Tuesday. Your note is very interesting too. Thanks.

Sorry to hear the news about bad weather Janice. Today in Poland sunny and about 25C. I'll take my cam and go to meadow soon.
This is amazing picture Janice. POV and composition are great - it remainds me some kind of flying bird with brown head and green wings. Great eye :-)

Nice shot Janice,
Nice to see the English have taken our weather with them for the rugby tour!!
The ferns do look very nice when wet, really well detailed and good colours. Well composed and good DOF.
Thanks for posting, I hope the weather clears up for you.

I like the color contrast. It takes an eye for beauty to notice. TFS

Great shot, Janice.
Sometimes the rain is good for the colours, as in this case.
Lovely colours, well composed and goo detaisl.
Great work.

Jancie, I like the "wet" look here as it has altered the color to the deep reddish brown as you say. A unique twist in your series of fern shots..Well done and TFS!

Hello again janice!
It's wonderful shot.Lighting,DOF,colors and composition are superb.TFS...:-)

Never thought of mixing dead and live leaves in the same composition. It works obviously very well. Ferns are already beautiful in terms of colors and textures, but, here, you add another artistic and intimate touch to it. Loaded with rain, with shiny reflections is beautiful, Janice.

Hi Janice!
This is magnificent capture.Red and green colors are amazing.I liked this work very much. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful picture, as usual, Jancie! Do you know how many kinds of fern there are in NZ? Is it more common with ferns in NZ than on other places in the world? I love ferns, too, they are fascinating. But we do not have so many kinds in Sweden.

Excellent contrasts of red and green, in-focus and out-of-focus. I'd have cropped it a little on both sides, left more than right; but that's being really picky!
