Today I present yet another butterfly which I have been tracking for some time now. But this time it was a chance sighting when I had been to Mangalajodi (about 70 kms. from Bhubaneswar) to see nesting birds inside Chilka Lake. As these are very swift fliers I had a tough time following it but finally I managed a few shots. Here it is sitting on a castor leaf infested with hordes of caterpillars. Maybe I got it tired before it could me.

Shot taken hand-held in relatively good conditions (a bit windy but good natural light). Hope everyone like it.

The Angled Castor, Ariadne ariadne, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in Asia.

Wingspan of 45-60 mm. A medium-sized rusty brown butterfly with distinct wavy wing margins. The upper side is marked with fine wavy black lines over the entire wing surface. The white spot below the costal margin of the forewing is distinctive. The underside is much darker than the upper side and has a few wavy bands bounded by faint black lines. The center of the largest band on the hind wing has a black disjointed streak running its length. The male is darker in colour. The 5th and 6th veins on the upper side hind wing are shining white and are not crossed by the wavy black lines.

It is found in all climatic zones from sea level to about 3000 feet elevation. However, it prefers the dry and intermediate zones. It is found all year round in small numbers and favors open scrub land. It is common in secondary forests, waste places, and specially along sunny property boundaries with overgrown vegetation.

It has a weak flight and stays just a few feet above ground, frequently settling on flowers or other vegetaion in its habitat. The flight is characteristic - a few downward power strokes followed by a short spell of gliding with its wings held horizontal. Once settled, it opens its wings completely, occasionally moving them back and forth in a slow deliberate manner. Both sexes visit flowers readily.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda

Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae

many thanks sharing this beauty my friend!

Hello Sumon,

Superb composition. Excellent focus and sharpness. Great POV and DOF. Very good natural colours.

hi sumon,
excellent capture, we hardly come accross this angled castor, good colors and lighting. a bit more contrast would be better, i feel. i did a workshop, hope you don't mind. tfs.

Hi Sumon!

Great notes for a great picture. The combination of instructive notes and a beautiful picture makes this posting very valuable, as we are used it from you. It seems that you were tracking this kind of butterfly for quite a moment and the result shows us that it was worth it. The way you present us the butterfly is very fine: the wings wide open, a good view on the whole design and also on the body. Moreover, the fact that the butterfly seems to lie on a wide spread leaf adds to the value of the picture.

Kind regards

Hello Sumonda, Superb shot and I like the shining portion in the wings. Looks like a curve. Was it the sunshine or sharpness effect. I would rather love the frontal view than the angled one. (personal choice). But your shot always inspire me whenever I shoot butterfly. In your language Kudos. Ganesh

This is the greatness of great photographers.Running after it for 1 hour, completely drained, dehydrated, muscles aching and what not.The result of this patience should be like this. The shot of that day which I could clearly remember.

Great focus, POV, sharp.

I grow short on words Sumon...without you here I think I would probably never post again...it was a tough time without you for a bit...Your work is so educational as is Pankaj...both of you and a couple of others are so tenacious and have a voracious appetite for imaging...I love it.
