TRZYSZCZ - try to say it my Friends!!! :> Not too easy? Hehehe! I really believe! Especially for all of you who are not from Poland and do not know Polish :> So... please try one more time! :>

Yes, you are right, this is my 9th part of Cicindelidae saga (a link to earlier parts can be found here). But this time – thanks or because of Lukasz Warcholinski (Kaszek) there will be no details about biology, ecology or diversity of this group. Today something different:

names of this beetle family in different languages! :>

Polish: Trzyszczowate, trzyszcze

English: Tiger beetles

German: Sandlaufkäfern

Dutch: Zandloopkevers

Czech: Svižníkovití

Spanish: Cicindelinos

Lithuanian: Šokliai

Norwegian: Sandjegere

Ukrainian: Стрибуни

Of course there are many other languages not included here so this list is not ended! :> I could not find any more so I would be very grateful for names in languages which are not present here :>

And now a few words about this species. No, this is not common Cicindela hybrida or mountain Cicindela sylvicola - species easy to mistake with our hero. This is a male of Cicindela maritima maritima, much rarer species, in many regions of Europe endangered and included in the Red Lists.

How to recognize it from two earlier? Not too easy but note characteristic shape of middle lunula on beetle’s elytra - it looks like a tune! (for better view of elytrae of these 3 species please see also here; I know, paper is in Polish but colour plates are international ;>)

This species prefers dunes, and sometime it is named Dune Tiger Beetle.

Picture was taken near Nida in Kursˇiu Nerija National Park (Curonian Spit) - one of only 2 regions of Lithuania where this species was found till now :>

Ok my Friends, so at the end please say it once again: TRZYSZCZ! ;>

Hi Radomir,
A beautiful view of this tiger beetle, better in my opinion than your image I´ve critiqued yesterday. Excellent sharpness, details and note. I´ve tried to say TRZYSZCZ, could it sound as trsishtch? what´s the sound of Y in polish?....it a language quite different I speak, spanish
Greetings
Hernán

I can see why you have gone as far as you have in this field. You know...very few people with the education and talent you have would post here...a few do and you are one, and if you do not get enough thanks, perhaps it is because some do not realize what wonderful heart you put into your work. I know!
Bob

Hi Radomir,

Interesting posting and notes. Fine detail on the TRZYSZCZ (I tried to say it as I typed) showing the fine hairs on the legs and body. Nicely placed in the frame to make it stand out. The back right leg is maybe a bit soft but that is nitpicking.
TFS

Hello Radomir,
Of course I could pronounce the Polish name correctly! :))
Great macro of the Dune Tiger Beetle, a species that is rare in Sweden. Superb sharpness and great POV, like a good illustration. You must be writing a book on European Tiger Beetles, if not you ought to!
I hope you can come to Sweden. Tell us when you want to come and Ulla and I can advise you on good places to visit at that time of year.
Best wishes,
Ivan

TRZYSZCZ! I won :-)

Czesc Radek!

Ciao Radomir, fantastic bug with wonderful details and splendid sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Radomir,
Oh no, I remember the road signs in Poland way back - impossible - I think we need some lessons in pronounciation from you! I'm glad there is latin although I don't master that either but at least it is easier to pronounce!! Another great capture of a Cicindela showing very sharp details and natural colours even of the sand. Excellent work as usual!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Radek

I've tried pronuncing some words in your language back in the US where i had some very nice Polish friends and...well :))

Another great addition to your tiger beetle saga. Your presentation here on TN for this group of animals is impressive and very educational and your photos are always great. They provide extra details and good examples for us all. By the way, Ivan's idea with a book/field guide is realld not bad at all :) I would really think about it if i were you :)

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: i took my first shots of a tiger beetle today. I was in the mountains this weekend and managed to find my first one :) I will show it to you soon :)

Hello Radomir.
Splendid macro! Insect strange... but beautiful!
Excellent details and perpective.
Excellent framing.
Congratulations, my friend!

Bonjour,
Impressionnant insecte bien documenté.
Bonne journée.

Wow. I am looking at beetles afresh. I sometimes stop and look at butterflies and things but rarely beetles. I have changed my mind. Thanks to you I will be looking more widely as I walk. You have a great eye and a great way with words in your explanations. Barry
