Better known backyard inhabitants:

In the pond the larvae of the Common toad (Amphibia; Bufonidae; Bufo bufo; Erdkröte; Crapaud commun) start their metamorphosis in June or July. This fellow measures 14 mm and he still has a stump of the larval tail. This will resorb in a few days and the toad will then definitely leave the open water and not return to it until sexually mature. The protuding ear glands are characteristic of all toads. The golden colour is produced by pigment containing starlike cells in the black skin.

When I was a biology student I was fascinated by the finding of a University professor in Bern, R. Weber, that the larval tail can be grown in in vitro after cutting it off. The addition of the metamorphosis hormone Thyroxin to the culture lead to self- resorption of the tail.

Hi Dietrich, great shot of an almost metamorphosed baby green toad. The guanophors are prominent in the skin:) Perfect in all around my friend.
