Lesser known backyard visitors:

I felt I had to show you some of the colourful specimens for a change. This is the Red-tipped shield bug (Hemiptera; Acanthosomatidae; Acanthosoma haemorrhoidalis L.; Stachelwanze), sitting on Raspberry leaf. The reason I lose my raspberries is not this bug that is rarely seen but a whole arsenal of other species, bugs, snails and beetles. The shield bug is quite big with 16-18 mm in length.

ID: Acanthosomatidae are differentiated from the similar looking Pentatomidae by the long spine protruding forward from the third abdominal sternite and the two instead of three tarsal segments. BUT, much more interesting is their brood care, the females collect the hatched young under their belly for protection like a hen does with the chicks.

Hello Dietrich,
This is a very fine capture of this bug showing razor sharp details of the shield. Beautiful colours too and a fine composition.
Your fill flash has worked very well here too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hallo Dietrich,
Helmut.

Hi Dietrich.
My congratulations. It is really brilliant shot. All is fantastic and firstly these are impressive DOF and ultimate sharpness/details of the bug and leaves. Lights and colours are spot on too. Bravo. Terrific job.
Alexei.

Lieber Dieter,
Alles liebe
Anne

Hi Dietrich,
As I see this time a "raspberry bug" ;> Very nice capture with wonderful details! I really like it! The only thing I would change is POV, it would be good to see also head of this insect. Anyway, great macro!
Best regards,
Radomir

Hello Dietrich!

Yes, exactly this part of shield bug will produce terrible smell when you'll disturb this insect :-) Great colours - it looks almost exotic and tropical.

Hello Dietrich,
My, oh my, what an interesting insect!
What amazes me are all those little "dots" that adorn its carapace.
Some of them look embossed and some of them look indented.
And if I look harder, they seem to switch, like an optical illusion.
What a great shot!
TFS. : )
