This is my number 21 in my D-flies competition with Horia. My friend posted today beautifull Calopteryx splendens so I've decided to strike back with this C.virgo. This is one and only exception from our D-flies Olympics rules - this picture was taken year ago. Unfortunatelly C.virgo is rather rare in my neighbourhood and I didn't capture this specie in 2008. I hope you'll forgive me because this insect is real beauty worth showing.

How our competition with Horia started?

My full list of D-flies:

1) Calopteryx splendens - Banded Demoiselle
2) Calopteryx virgo - Beautiful Demoiselle
3) Coenagrion puella - Azure Damselfly
4) Enallagma cyathigerum - Common Bluet
5) Erythromma najas - Red-eyed Damselfly
6) Ischnura elegans - Blue-tailed Damselfly
7) Lestes dryas - Robust Spreadwing
8) Lestes viridis - Western Willow Spreadwing
9) Pyrrhosoma nymphula - Large Red Damselfly
10) Sympecma fusca - Common Winter Damselfly

11) Anax imperator - Emperor Dragonfly
12) Aeshna cyanea - Southern Hawker
13) Aeshna grandis - Brown Hawker
14) Aeshna mixta - Migrant Hawker
15) Libellula depressa - Broad-bodied Chaser
16) Libellula quadrimaculata - Four-spotted Chaser
17) Orthetrum cancellatum - Black-tailed Skimmer
18) Sympetrum danae - Black Darter
19) Sympetrum sanguineum - Ruddy Darter
20) Sympetrum striolatum - Common Darter
21) Sympetrum vulgatum - Vagrant Darter

Witam Grzesiu!
No jak dla mnie to bardzo ladny profil switezianki! Swietny detal i ostrosc.
Gratulacje i pozdrowienia! I czekam na nr 22! :>

Hi Greg

No worries, my friend! Any photos apply as long as they are shot in Poland for you and in Romania for me :) Is that ok? :)

You are right, this is real beauty worth showing and i agree with you in saying that the species of thie genus are all wonderful. However, i've always had a soft spot for Lestes and i'm not sure which one to name "most beautiful" :)

Anyway, your shot is exceptional, with impeccable sharpness on the d-fly, splendid colors and gorgeous natural contrast.
I see you've caught him with a little prey in his mouth...a nice bonus, too :)

Bravo and TFS

Olá Greg,
impressionante mesmo o brlho do inseto e a nitidez de sua imagem. O contraste ficou ótimo também.
Parabéns e Abraço

Hello Greg,
As far as your competition is concerned its a bit of a cheat but the capture is fabulous indeed! C. virgo is much less common here and I haven't seen it at all this year! Sad!! This makes up for it though - brilliant shot of this one in a lovely pose and showing sharp details and wonderful colours. Well done!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

OOH! I Love these ones.
Look at those amazing metallic looking wings.
They remind me of chain mail of knights (who say NI) or mithril of elves from Lothlorien.
A beautiful clear shot Grzeggzy.

Hello Greg,
Do the rules of your competition with Horai allow last year's photos?
Whatever, it is an excellent capture of a male C. virgo with superb technical qualities and set in a classical composition.
Thanks for sharing this delight,

Pozdrawiam serdecznie,
