The smallest and most common American woodpecker, the Downy Woodpecker is found throughout most of North America from Alaska to Florida. It lives in a variety of habitats from wilderness forests to urban backyards, and comes readily to bird feeders.

Hi Mario,
this is a surprise as I knew nuthatches and chickadee will eat from a person's hand but I never knew that a woodpecker would do so as well,Well the details are outstanding in this shot as are the colours and fine feather details.Now I wish one would land on my hand as I very much like these birds and would like that kind of close-up view too.I was photoing some Downy,s earlier today but they never come very near to me.An excellent photo with a good reference for scale well worth uploading and thank you Mario,I glad you did. Bob

Beautiful shot. The hand also gives perspective to the size of the woodpecker as well as a bird feeder, wonderful.

It is very interesting to see the downy woodpecker being so tame! All the ones around here are so timid! I do know that they are tamer than the hairy woodpecker, but I never thought they would be this tame! Great capture, the details on the bird are very clear,

The Royal Botanical Garden - Hamilton This my favorite place to just hang around to watch birds interact with people, it's really amazing.
Not only will Nuthatches and chickadee eat from a person's hand but, I had a Blue jay snatch a peanut from my hand and a Downy woodpecker as well. The birds here have developed a neat bond with the people who , even in the coldest days of winter, will come down to feed them. Luckily I live close by. Thanks!
