This time an educational presentation. In Poland there are 3 species of land snails from genus Cepaea. I wan to show you the differences between those 3 species. Here you can see the photo of C. nemoralis.

You can find the photo of C. vindoboensis in my last post here. The shell is dull with thin stripes and pink margin and it is not so variable as two other species.

CEPAEA NEMORALIS also here and here and here
The most important diagnostic features:

- very variable (pink, yellow, with different number of thin or thick stripes on the shell or some times without stripes)
- dark brown or almost black margin of shell - the most important feature!!!

Other features:

- it can be a little bit bigger than C. hortensis (wide 21-27mm, high 17-20mm)
- shell is smooth, lustrous and shiny

Habitat: forests, bushes (synanthropic it can be faund in gardens, parks, cementarys)

Distribution: mostly in western Europe (in eastern Europe too Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Hungary but also in Sweden, Norway.

CEPAEA HORTENSIS here

The most important diagnostic features:

- very variable (pink, yellow, with different number of thin or thick stripes on the shell or some times without stripes)
- white margin of shell - the most important feature!!!

Other features:

- size (wide 15-23mm, high 14-18mm)

- shell is smooth, lustrous and shiny

Habitat: forests, bushes (synanthropic it can be faund in gardens, parks, cementarys) often together with C. nemoralis

Distribution: mostly central and western Europe, In Scandinavia mostly in southern part but in Norway even behind the polar circle.

In Europe you can also find other species of Cepaea: Cepaea (Austrotachea) sylvatica according to Fauna Europaea present in France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. There are also some local subspecies of nemoralis and hortensis

Czesc Krzysiek!

Swietny pomysl! Malo kto wysyla slimaki na TN. A to przeciez takie ciekawe zwierzaki.

Witaj,
Pozdrawiam, Pawel.

Czesc Krzysiek!
Widze, ze ostatnio 'przerzuciles sie' na slimaki. Swietne fotki. Bardzo ostre, kolory sa naturalne, dobre kadr i swiatlo.
Podoba sie! :)
Pozdrawiam
Kaszek

Witam ponownie!
Chyba bardziej podobalaby mi sie idea by wrzucic 3 gatunek do 3 prezentacji 3 dnia ;)
Pozdrowionka,
Radek

Hi Krzysztof

Great shot - the forms are very well presented, creating a 3D effect. Good colour and lighting also.

James

Hi friend, another wonderful macro of these snails. I think you are preparing a handbook of European Snails:D. Great notes on identifying them.
many thanks for sharing!
