Better known backyard visitors:
The easiest way to shoot insects in flight is to catch them when hovering. This 14 mm hoverfly (Diptera; Syrphidae; Scaeva pyrastri; Späte Grosstirn-Schwebfliege) is approaching a Parsnip flower. Why hover and not sit down right away? The tiny spider that hides beneath a flower might give a clue: while standing still the fly's eye has a higher resolution. Maybe the fly checks for such predators before sitting down.

Hello Dietrich,

Excellent sharp picture of this Scaeva in a very nice composition. Good light and great natural colours. As far as the hovering is concerned, which this family of fly and not the other flies? Do not they have the same vision?

A wonderfully sharp macro shot, thanks to the deep DOF resulting from an f/16 aperture, a perfect composition in natural colours and a good lesson on nature within the notes! Excellent Dietrich, and thank you indeed for sharing this fleeting instance in nature with us my friend.

hallo Dieter,
Die fliegenden Insekten haben es Dir angetan..mir gefallen diese Bilder auch. Farblich schöne Komposition mit Ueberraschungen. Ich hatte die kleine Spinne gar nicht wahrgenommen, beim ersten Blick! Interessante Fragestellung. Typisch Dieter!
Hab herzlichen Dank
Ein schönes Wochenende

Hello Dietrich,

A very nice composition, and the little spider waiting beneath the flower is an excellent capture, I probably wouldn't have noticed that if you didn't mention it. An excellent image of nature.
