I found Cuddles, this lovely porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) plodding his way over uneven terrain. I'm sure that he, like me, was headed away from the shotgun blasts that filled the canyon we were in. Believe it or not, under his prickly nature, there is soft, long, wooly underfur. They walk pigeon-toed and have long, curved claws.

While following a cow moose and her calf, I spotted this fellow. Instead of doing my usual trekking about, I sat and listened. When I heard quite a bit of racket (not related to the shots I heard moments earlier), I got up, followed the sound, and found the cow moose and her baby.

I'm thinking the poachers were after her - and while some may think it is mean, I have no problems calling fish/wildlife because I could have been hit by a stray bullet. Hunting season hasn't started and I did hear something whiz by me, and although I think it might have been a bird with a large hum, I shudder to think that it might've been something else.

I deserve, as do all others, to walk in peace, especially when hunting season has yet to start. Oh, and speaking of hunting, I interrupted a coyote chasing down his prey. I saw him bolting out of the brush, chasing God knows what, spun around to protect my camera, got off one shot, and then waited until he passed.

This all happened in one morning after spending the night with a friend. Actually, all of this happened within an hour of me going for my walk outside, alone, just to see what I could find...

I'm still alive, no broken bones, and returned with minor bruises and a few good photos. :-)

I love this photo Kathy,
Very sharp and detailed showing the beauty of this often misunderstood animal. Well done!!
The last time I saw a porcupine was years ago In Pennsylvania.
My buddy and I were traveling at night and the trucks headlights picked up eye shinning ahead, it turned out to be a porcupine that we almost ran over. We ended up getting a few quills in one of the tires, and the porcupine didn't get hurt.

Hi Kathy,

Wonderful shot of this cute little critter, although how anyone can pick up a gun and kill defenceless creatures is beyond me, tread softly and stay safe, "tis hunting season" t.f.s

Hi Kathy,

Good capture of an animal that is probably rarely captured. Nice highlight and purposefull pose. The image is worthwhile to dodge a couple of bullets for.

Hi Kathy
I like the name you've chosen for this prickly guy, it really suits him. This is a really great portrait of a Porcupine on the move through the tall grass. Nice sharp detail, color and lighting. Well done.
