Goldcrest (Regulus regulus)

No sooner had I taken a couple of images of a Wren on this wire fence, than a Goldcrest turned up. As my camera was still set to take a shot I could take three before he flew off.
In all three he was puffed up. In the alternative image in the WORKSHOP you can see the yellow crest more clearly.

The wire vibrated as it landed and continued to do so for the short time it took to take the three images. A high shutter-speed was therefore necessary and these little birds are very active anyway.

The Goldcrest is fairly common in forested areas that are dominated by conifers, though it hunts insects in deciduous forests as well. It is resident in S. Sweden but it breeds further north to move south in the winter. This means that in the autumn S. Sweden has a surfeit of Goldcrests and they feed in bushes as well as trees, even among the reeds of the nature reserve that this new fence encloses.

The Gold crest is widespread in N and C. Europe and many spend the winter in the Mediterranean area.

As I said before I try to avoid taking photographs of birds on wires but this was irresistible!

This image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 4 meters. (13 ft) After moderate cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened

What a fabulous shot Ivan.
I love the cute little crest.
A great close up look at this little bird, which is quite similar to some of our NZ species.
Very nice work!
Cheers
Steve

wow how cool...an action shot so to speak...latent energy turning into kinetic...just in the wink of an eye and the click of your shutter...Super!

Hello Ivan
It is as you say best to avoid wires etc to capture a natural image but you are certainly excused on this superb capture of the Goldcrest. It is also interesting to see how the feet grip. In both images he looks a little off balance..I wonder if this is due to the uniformity and almost polished surface of the wire opposed to the irregular composition of a twig?
All the Same a fantastic capture.
A good weekend to you.
Paul

Hi Ivan
Excellent shot of this Goldcrest. I'm lucky in that this species visits a birch tree outside our apartment window to feed every now and then. You have done very well to gain a good shot of this tiny bird. Really well exposed and good detail.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hello Ivan,

This tiny bird looks fantastic in your photo as the image is extremly sharp showing well the plumage and the light renders fine the colors. The well lit yellow spot from bird's forhead bring so much life to the image. It is a perfect match between the background and the colors of the bird.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Ciao Ivan, beutiful diagonal composition with lovely bird, fine details and splendid sharpness, great blurry BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hola Ivan,
realmente tierna esta captura,
buen foco y pov.
fino encuadre,

Hi Ivan,
I can see you are specialising on the smallest birds. Though Goldcrest is quite common it is very difficult subject being so lively. Never seen one wire, usually behind a twig or something and just for a fraction of second. Excellent result with good pose and composition, pin sharp details and natural bright colours.

merhaba Ivan
sorry for my delay, I was away for a formal meeting and small trip on the Taurus Mts. I have a change newly to visit TN and your last two posts. This is very beautiful Goldcrest. I know the wire easily from your Wren shots. I also looked at workshop. both of them wonderful. WS shows Goldcrest's golden top very well. Focus and colors wonderful. Two great works for this cute passerine bird. Thanks for sharing, have a nice week my friend

Really nice picture of swedens smallest bird. I have never seen one here in umeċ, but i know photographers who have.

I envy this picture. Its really clean. The background suits the bird very well, and you managed to get the focus spot on.

I have no suggestions of improvement at all.

very nice and cute, TFS Ori
