THE KORU

I think it is about time I posted another picture of our New Zealand fern.

The curled, gently unfurling frond of the tree fern is known as the ‘KORU’, and is a symbol of ongoing birth and growth in Maori culture.

The KORU is a young tree-fern frond
, often stylized by graphic artists for use as a New Zealand symbol. The Maori "KORU" design draws from the young fern KORU, as it stretches and develops into the new fern leaf.

A Maori proverb describing the KORU translates literally as, ‘one falls, one rises’, conveying the cycle of life and death — as one branch dies, another replaces it.

The KORU design is used extensively in Maori artwork, combined with other KORU in a variety of ways to make patterns. Air New Zealand uses a stylised version of the KORU on the tailfin of its aircraft to represent the airline’s link to New Zealand.

The KORU shape is a scroll shape and is linked to the New Zealand fern plant.

The iconic silver fern, from foetal KORU to graceful frond, is a cornerstone of New Zealand culture — a symbol of national pride and as famous as the All Blacks, who wear it on their rugby shirts.

Hi Janice!

Not later than yesterday, we were talking about you and your predilection for the fern. We had a little meeting of TN members (anel, meyerd) and when we saw the now golden fern (we are in autumn), we were thinking at you. Thank you for this nice picture, showing delightful shapes and patterns!

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Janice,

This wonderful fern, captured with precise, sharp details, does not stand out on the thumbnails. How glad, I am that I saw your name and persevered!
I love the way the new frond are curled and the hairs standing so erect! It certainly gives the appearance of vitality!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
