Here is a very rare sight, a baby Kiwi in the wild. In September I was fortunate enough to visit a relative who has 'Kiwi boxes' in the wild. We visited the boxes and the very first one had the most wonderful sight. A large male tending and egg, and when he moved to our joy, there close beside him was a one day old chick. Image not the best due to low light and shutter lag, but a fantastic record of the sight.

From Wikipedia:

A kiwi is any of the species of flightless birds endemic to New Zealand of the genus Apteryx (the only genus in family Apterygidae). At around the size of a domestic chicken, kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites. All kiwi species are endangered. The kiwi is also a national symbol of New Zealand. The kiwi lays the largest egg in comparison to its body size.

Hi Pam. I am sure this is a sight not mant people have seen. What a cute little thing . Even with the light you were still abale to get a well detailed picture with natural colours. TFS this picture.

Hi Pam
I feel honored to see such a wonderful sight. Thanks for sharing this rare and unique looking Kiwi. I'm sad to hear it's endangered, but glad people are helping it out with boxes to nest. He's a beautiful little guy and I wish him a long healthy life.
Well done.
TFS Janice

Hello Pam,
What a treat to find a baby Kiwi!
That must have been so exciting.
Not a bad shot considering the conditions.
Thanks for posting it.

Hello Pam

A wonderful capture of this iconic symbol of New Zealand.
This is the first I believe I have seen on TN.
The rarity makes this a super post.
Very good clarity and detail.
I hope everything has returned to normal for you.
