This is Evening Brown Butterfly also known as Melanitis leda. It a common butterfly mostly seen flying at the time of evening. Most of the time it rests on the dry leaf or small shrubs.

I have observed quite a variation in patten and color of this butterfly in its seasonal forms.

This post is special for me as it offers a very unique view of the butterfly. The outer pattern and the inside pattern bot are visible in a single view. I have never seen this butterfly with open wings so its almost impossible getting the view of the inside wing pattern. In this capture you can see that the upper part of the wing is missing and so the inside part of the other wings is clearly visible with the markings.

I have included the pov from the other side in the posted workshop so that one can have a clear idea of the wing pattern of this beautiful butterfly.

This shot has been taken with a difficult point of view. the camera was parellel to the butterfly which was resting on the floor. I was on my belly flat on the earth with the camera to get this shot and was happy to see the final results.

The composition is original as no cropping has been done and so are my humble notes :-).

your critiques and comments are most welcome.

Nicely done, Pankaj. Excellent detail, great point of view and color. The focus and DOF are also precisely executed.

Well done!

One thing I notice right off besides your always good styled of shooting...is the eyes...they stick right out with quite the clarity one doesn't always get in this type of image....and with the lighting which is superb....it very much changes tee whole picture from drab. to magnificent! VERY much appreciated..

Hello Pankaj

The texture is superb, with excellent sharpness and focus.
Lovely,natural colours .
The POV and DOF are very good.
It really stands out from the OOF BG.

Hello Pankaj,
Though the hindwing is torn thia ia a fine portrait of the Evening Brown taken from a standars POV in this closed-wing position. Excellent sharpness and lighting to show not only the intact part of the hindwing but the upper surfaceof the forewing where the hindwing is damaged.
TFS this fine image,

very nice shot of this butt...yes one does see this very often in the evenings heading for the nearest light source....difficult to shoot during the day as it is mostly deep in the shrubs and never gives a clear view!

Hello Pankaj,
At first I didn't notice that a part of the wing was missing. But just this fact makes the shot so special, especially if it is so difficult to see the buttterfly with open wings. Excellent and sharp presentation and very subtle and fine colours. I know the position on the belly very well too :-).
Thanks for this beautiful posting

Hello Pankaj,

You have shown in avery good manner this butterfly. There is a well chosen background it's colors being in a good contrast with the butterfly. Therefore viewers attention is canalised to the main subject, the butterfly. Image is very sharp showing insect's wings in great details. Both pattern and texture can be observed in detail.

Thank you for sharing,

What an opportunity to get both sides of the wing of this Evening Brown Butterfly! A magnificent macro showing off the beautiful wing markings. A lovely position with a good view of the head and antennae. Colors and details are excellent. A nice background that blends well with the butterfly. I would love to see a picture of you taking this picture!
