Vervet Monkey / Chlorocebus aethiops

As many of you know I was beyond myself going on the Kruger trip and could not contain my eagerness to start taking photos. It was the 1st time I could partake photographically in the Kruger Park. As I mentioned in the endnote of my previous posting, the last time we visited the Kruger I was still the "caddy and apprentice".

I felt like a queen sitting in the backseat having a chauffeur (thank you Loot) driving me around, stopping where I wanted to stop, waiting patiently until I have taken enough shots, many times depriving him of some photographic moments that came our way. I was really spoilt and enjoyed it very much.

Although I am slightly disappointed with some of the photographs I have taken, it was really difficult to decide which one I wanted to use as my 1st posting after the lovely vacation. Please read more about our holiday in Loot's travelogue. (Kruger NP & Mpumalanga 2008)

I am sure the most of us find monkeys rather cute. Although it is a sight we often see on Trek Nature, we cannot let it pass without the normal expressions like "it's so cute" or "isn't it so adorable" or "it's so funny" and even "ag shame" and many more "oohs" and "aahs". That is exactly how I felt when I saw this monkey with her little baby.

We were driving very slowly, as I saw this monkey with her baby sitting on a branch alongside the road. In my opinion this monkey (also known as Blou apie in Afrikaans) was so small, and in a way it was unbelievable that she could be the mommy of a baby. But it was for sure her little one. The youngster was holding on to its mommy for dear life, and the mommy was loving and protecting it in her animal behaviour kind of way.

It was such a touching moment seeing the two of them together. Every now and again the little one would suckle, then leave the teat and maneuver all about. This little one was like any other youngster alive and quite curious. Making big eyes and pulling faces, leaping too and through (please see Workshop 1). Of course all this playful activity eventually had its toll on the little one and it tired out. That was when I was fortunate enough to capture it while taking this BIG yawn.

During this time I had ample opportunities to take some lovely photos. At first we were the only cars around and the mommy did not look agitated or disturbed by our cameras. It was only when some more cars came pulling up, also wanting to take some photos that she suddenly pressed the little one towards her stomach and wrapped her arms around it, hiding it away from the onlookers.

If it was not for the arms and paws sticking out from her side (please see Workshop 2) one would never have known that there was a little monkey hidden away in her embrace. Although it might be very common habit for these primates to protect their little ones this way, it was very touching to see and appreciate this gesture happening in front of my eyes. The mum's protection of her little one was really a special moment for me.

I am really chuffed at this image, as it shows so much of the innocence of babyhood. So unsophisticated and care free, lovingly and adourable, and definitely an image that I personally will "ooh and aah" about for sometime to come. This is indeed a personal favourite.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
Unfortunately October this year isn't the same as October 2007 for me...
So, I'm looking forward to see your photos.
(I believe you were also in KNP in October 2007)
It's really difficult to photograph these little Vervet monkeys 'cause the mother is very protective. At least that's what I experienced last year.
Thanks for sharing a Blou apie.

tebrikler harika bir kare

Hello Anna, welcome back! a lovely shot of this cute young monkey. TFS and regards,

Hello Anna,
Wonderful photo of this baby Vervet Monkey. It's almost human. Perfect sharpness and POV. Beautiful natural colours in an excellent composition.

Hi Anna!

You present us a delightful wildlife picture with a great effect. The baby is marvellous and you have captured an expressive moment. It's not just a picture of an animal, it's the expression of a face and of a moment in its life. I also like your notes where you tell about the innocence of babyhood. Your picture expresses this very well. Moreover, I also can't help using the expression "it's so cute" because it simply is...

Kind regards

Hello Anna,
I tell you ,I have to yawn too looking at this cute picture, not because it is dull, but because I feel great sympathy for this little crature. I like the narrow framing you have chosen focussing on the little monkey's head and expression. I also appreciate your workshop pictures and your note. Thanks also for your kind comment on my butterfly-picture.

Hi Anna,

From the wonderful expression and excellent timing, to the babies small hand clutching tightly to mom, a sure winner :)

This is priceless Anna!
A great capture taken with fine timing and technical excellence and set in a great composition, this is a baby monkey yawn that creates interest. Both this image and that of it with its mother are superb and I thank you for sharing them: I am only sorry to have missed them earlier!

Hi Anna,
This moment's so unbelievably human! Perfect, emotional capture. This is the case where technique doesn't count as much as atmosphere. Wonderful shot. Tfs and congrats.

This is such a beautiful image of a mother's love. It is such a heaven to be cuddling up in mother's arm. Feeling save and warm, what a place to be. This is agreat close up portrait of the velvet monkey, you caught him at a very great moment. great details and clarity. I love it.

Thanks for your e-mail and concern. All is fine with me, great actually, just a little busy with remodeling my house and work. I just couldn't really dedicated enough time to be involve. I don't really like to just write a two-sentence comments. to full express my thought and constructive critique take some time. If I post photos, I will get some comment and it only fair I do the same in return, not to give points but honest critique.

I will try to visit once in a while. Thanks again, Anna,

Hi Anna,

Its nice to be back home and many thanks for the feedback, I have missed so many postings the last three to four weeks, and have a lot of catching up to do but I have to say this has to be one of the best shots I've seen on T.N.

What a simply superb shot, everything about this just falls into the perfect category, from the expression on the little fellows face, to the detail and composition, a beautiful moment captured at the right moment, you just can't get any better. I love it.

Cheers Rick :)

Hi Anna,
I understand that this picture is one of your favorites! It is definitively a "ooh, aah" picture :) I never had the chance to see monkeys in the wild (there are any here is this cold and white country) but I would be much impressed I guess. This is an excellent capture with perfect timing, details, exposure and composition. As usual, your notes are most interesting. Thanks,

I'm amazed and keep looking at this little fellow... pretty soon I too will start yanning!!!

My dear friend,
Your photo is infectionous! The longer I looked at this scrunched up face, the bigger became my urge to yawn:-)!! amazing! It is also amazing how much baby monkeys look like old men ... :-)

I don't know how many electronic deaths this remark will earn me, but hopefully when I see you next time, Loot will have forgotten this statement...

I do understand your own attraction to this little fellow and follow your lead in adding your work to my favorites.

Thanks for the comprehensive notes, and I am very pleased you added your work to my theme "Juveniles"

Take care, hugs
