Final instar caterpillar of Cerura vinula, known in English as the Puss Moth (from the allegedly cat-like appearance of the very furry adult moth).

One of the most extraordinary caterpillars found in Europe, this close-up of the head shows the threat posture, which may be reinforced thrashing its extensible tail flagellae and spraying formic acid from a concealed gland at the head.

This species, like many other moths, is becoming scarcer in the UK and I bred and released a large number in 2007 and 2008 in the hope of re-establishing a local colony. I will post more shots of adults and caterpillars over the next few days.

Minimal post processing - just a slight crop, resize and slight sharpening. Manually focused and exposed.

Great macro of this colourful Puss Moth caterpillar. Details on the skin superb. TFS and regards,

Hi Nigel, a perfectly composed and focused macro capture of this beautiful moth butterfly. I loved the first smal extremities:) They seems a baby hand:). TFS this fine image my friend.
Also thanks for your kind e-mail on the ids.
Have a nice Sunday!

Hi Nigel,
this caterpillar looks a little scary - a good protection if the birds also think so ;-)
Excellent shot, I like it thanks

Looking through your gallery, this one caught my eye immediately.
I can't resist an interesting looking macro, and this one is a beaut.
A great POV and composition.
Plenty of detail and a bit of tantalising colour there too.
A great image all around.

Hi Nigel,
This is a most amazing shot!
Such clarity of details. And the POV is just magnificent!
This caterpillar does look scary, what with those big black fake eyes, and that seemingly wide-open red mouth! Fantastic mimicry (is that the right word?)
So where are his real eyes? Are those 4 "teeth" really his mandibles?
TFS. : )

Salam nigel
Very nice macrography

sorry no more smileys...

Hello Nigel,
impressing confrontation with the frightening face of Cerura vinula!
I like the powerful close approach, the lively diagonal composition, the natual colours in soft light.
Nice to read about your attempts to help an endangered species recover in good numbers.
With thanks, and all my best wishes to you for a Happy New Year in beautiful nature.

Buen encuadre y enfoque, por lo que captaste a la perfección los detalles de la cabeza y de las patas. Bonitos y naturales colores. Un excelente trabajo.
Saludos Nigel: Josep Ignasi.
