This is the Heliconius cydno (Grinning Heliconian or Blue and White Longwing). A photo from a butterfly garden.

Range: Mexico to Columbia and Ecuador

The longwing butterflies have unusually long lifespans and high fecundity rates, which largely result from their augmented diet. Instead of surviving on food stores from the larval stage or solely sipping flower nectar, adult longwing butterflies are avid pollen eaters. These trait make them eminently suitable for butterfly farming and butterfly gardening. Also, adult Longwings may live for several months, much longer than most butterflies.

The longwing butterflies are also known as Heliconians. They are brightly colored butterflies with long forewings. Once placed in their own family, they are now considered closely related to the fritillaries. Larvae of most longwings feed on passion vines, and this host plant imparts noxious chemicals to the larvae which are carried over to the adult butterflies. This relationship is identical to the monarch butterflies' reliance on its host plant, milkweed, for defense. Predators find these chemicals distasteful and avoid eating the butterflies.

Ciao Peter,
splendida macro, eccellenti POV e composizione sulle diagonali, l'ambientazione con la pioggia e l'utilizzo del flash danno brillantezza a questa meravigliosa farfalla, molto buona la definizione, bellissimi i colori e BG.
TFS.
Maurizio

What a beautiful butterfly you have captured in a butterfly park, Peter!
For me, these are unique and uncommon species because we don't see them here in India.
Superb POV, focus and colours.
TFS and regards.

Paul

Hello Peter,

This is a very nice close-up of the butterfly. You have chosen a fine composition for the image with the edge of the leaf creating a diagonall of the image. Butterfly is sharply shown and wings colors attract wiewers atention. As you have chosen a suitable DOF the insect is shown in very good sharpness.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

A finely executed close up work Peter, the straight, lateral viewpoint perfectly display the salient features of this finely formed individual in great detail. TFS this fine image my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Peter, beautiful macro very sharp, vivid colors and nice contrast with de background.

regards, Dan.

Hallo Peter,
Thanks for sharing

Hi Pater

Great macro here once again from you!
The parallel side POV again helped you in getting exactly what you wanted - excellent sharpness on the subject with a shallow DOF so that the BG will be nicely blur.
The outcome is beautiful, with gorgeous natural colors and sharp contrast on your subject.
A worthy presentation for this Blue and White Longwing!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Peter.

Magnific capture, excellent colors, contrast , sharpness, exposure, point o view, beautiful composition, goos note.

Thanks....RICARDO.

Hello Peter
I paged through your portfolio and could not pass this one. This is indeed a beauty. I am not sure if this is a male or female but this is a most elegant looking insect, with wonderful colours and details. The combination of rich and warm colours are striking, and the green leaf with the droplets one really puts that extra oomph into this already special image. I cannot find fault. The composition, depth of field, sharpness, focus, framing and all other I forgot to mention is just spot on. This worth a well deserved smiley. Kind regards.
Anna

Nice shot of this little beauty Peter,

Good POV and well composed as well :)
