Steenbok / Raphicerus campestris

I would like to dedicate today's posting to Ganesh Narayanan (Gannu). I want to thank Ganesh for the compassion, interest and concern he has shown towards Loot in this time that he has been hospitalised and operated on, as well as afterwards during his recovery. Both Loot and I appreciate this gesture and friendliness from him. Loot was pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call of well wishes all the way from India. This phone call actually made me realise that this dedication was long overdue; as I received the same concern and kindness in the time I had pleurisy, and was not able to participate on Trek Nature as much as I would have loved to. Every now and again an e-mail would pop up in my inbox from Ganesh, enquiring about the state of my health. Even little Vignesh, his 12 year old son, enquired about my health and that gesture I'll keep close to my heart, as it was very special at the time.

In the 9 months that I have been part of Trek Nature I have learned to know Ganesh as a humble person with a pleasant personality that always aims to please his fellow members. Do yourself a favour and drop by Ganesh's gallery for a treat of some wonderful shots, you won't be sorry that you did.

General Overview
The steenbok is a small antelope that lives on the plains of South Africa, as well as Tanzania, south Kenya and Mozambique. It is one of the loveliest and most lovable of the African bucks. The steenbok prefers to live in a dry area that feature rocks and bushy areas. It has large eyes, gigantic ears and a tuft of a tail. The female is usually larger than the male, weighing in at about 13 kilograms (30 pounds). The colouring of the animal is rufous fawn with white on the abdomen, inside legs, eyebrows and a patch on the throat. It has facial glands in front of its eyes.

Only the male steenbok has horns. These are almost vertical from the head, with a slight curve at the tip. They are sharp and smooth. He will not use these implements to ward off predators, however if an attacker approaches, the steenbok will lie flat in the grass. He will keep his large ears folded back. He will stay frozen in such a position until the predator is almost within reach. Then he will jump to his feet and run as fast as he can. Every now and again he will look back to see how close his pursuer has gotten.

The steenbok does not group together in large herds. The average square mile of steenbok country may feature between one and ten animals. Essentially, though, the animal is sedentary. He will feed throughout the daylight hours.

The steenbok has a pedal gland which is apparently unused. They also have a gland underneath the throat called an intermandibular gland. This is better developed in males than in females. The only other antelope that has been seen to exhibit such a gland is the European Musk Deer.

The steenbok is a herbivore, feeding on the leaves of bushes and most grasses. It is preyed on by all of the African big cats, as well as baboons and other large monkeys. The martial eagle is yet another feared predator. However, some steenbok have been recorded to feed on meat by killing young ground birds. This would be very rare, however, done during a time of hardship.

The male steenbok will mark out an exclusive territory, of which he will be protective. It would appear that the male will use such man made barriers as telegraph lines to mark out his territory.

A characteristic of the steenbok is that before it defecates or urinates, it will first clear a spot with its front hooves and then, afterwards, cover over the contents by scraping soil over the spot. This marks the steenbok as the only bovine to scrape the ground before urinating.

The steenbok mainly breeds around the October through December period, but this can occur at any time of the year. Gestation period is five and a half months. Babies are normally born singly. The steenbok is monogamous and will remain mated for life.

The steenbok has been known to take refuge from predators in aardvark burrows. The burrows are also used as places for the female to breed. They can also serve as a type of nursery for the baby until it is able to fend for itself.

The steenbok is a vital source of food for the famous Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. Despite this, however, the Bushmen hold the steenbok in high regard. Many times the Bushmen have observed the animal standing without fear as white men have blasted rifle shots in its direction, to nonchalantly wander out of gunshot range when it gets the urge to do so. It is this fearlessness, along with the grace and agility of the steenbok that has won this incredible animal the respect that it so richly deserves among the natives of Africa. Source

Merhaba Anna,

Your description of Ganesan is very apt, Anna. I met him personally a few months back; we live almost in the same city. He is a gentle and caring person, no doubt. I am touched by his concern for yours and Loot's health. Hope both of you are well now.
Regarding your picture of "Big Ears", it is an adorable capture. Steenbok is a lovely creature and its ears are truly special. I am intrigued by those hairy patterns inside them. The picture in the portrait orientation is just beautiful.
Thanks and kind regards.
Ram

Hello Anna,

great close up from this Steenbok, very good eye contact.
Nice pov and beautiful natural colours.

Gert

Hi Anita!

You present us a delightful portrait of a Steenbok. The thumbnail does not allow to imagine how beautiful it would be once opened. The picture yet is classical, but also technically perfect. The sharpness is superb and shows rich details. Moreover, the picture does not only just show a portrait, but also reflects an expression. In addition to that, the title and the subject match very well. It's impressive and funny at the same time to look at the animal's ears with the symmetric shapes and patterns. Your notes are very interesting and detailed, too.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Anna

A very beautiful portrait of this cute Steenbok here!
I love the fact that you've caught it looking straight at you...that direct eye-contact is terrific and adds so much more impact to the photo.
The details are again very nice (especially from a compact cam) and the BG is great, too - a bit blurred so that it would distract too much, but also present, to give an even more natural feel to the shot.
Nice work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Anna,
this is an interesting looking creature and it's ears are a wonder being as heavily haired as they are,it must get cold over night in the area of the world where it lives. The next feature that catches my eyes are it's own as they are very large and doe like,so innocent looking if you will. This photo has very good colour and well focused details that bring out it's features in a most pleasant way.Thank you for sharing this one with the world.
